of course that's just one hypothetical in a whole game's worth of decisions but i think i do understand the impulse to try to avoid overriding player emotions with character ones
it's just that the same thing can be accomplished by knowing when it's best to just not have dialogue

if the character has company, i could plausibly enjoy dialogue commenting on how pretty the waterfall is. if the character is alone then them commenting on it would feel like i'm being told how to feel and it would cheapen the moment

like i'm imagining a hypothetical scenario where i approach a waterfall in a game. there are a bunch of different contexts to handle the character reaction to it

on one hand i've played as some great voiced protags, on the other i'll absolutely take a silent one over the potential for an annoying one

this is one of those things i've never managed to form a stance on one way or the other, but you got me thinking
