This photo shows a vintage-style window partially obscured by green ivy. The window is white with multiple panes and one can see the reflection of the sky in the glass. There's an old-fashioned yellow rotary telephone with a black cord hanging off the window sill, adding a touch of whimsy to the scene. The surrounding walls are a neutral cream color and the ivy adds a vibrant touch of nature to the man-made structure.

I've loved this musical since the first time I watched it.
I almost know it by heart.
Despite the religious background, I simply love it.

Today, after more than 20 years, I was driving while listening to this piece and sang it at the top of my voice, just like I used to do on certain days 20 [โ€ฆ]

A black and white photo of a rural farm scene, just days old but evoking a timeless atmosphere. Okay, you know what? This is my own personal web site, so I get to choose what I publish. So Iสผll say it. Iสผm tired of being told variations of that individual choices donสผt matter, that we are forever stuck in the exact situation we currently have, and that the only way to effect change is by somehow getting everyone to change their ways simultaneously (usually by making large-scale societal changes at the political governance level; sometimes even by changing the political governance system itself) thereby by some unspecified mechanism causing those other options to magically appear even though no one individually has previously been asking for those (or even anything closer to them than the status quo) _because_ why even would they if individual choices do not matter anyway? Climate change? By all means, donสผt stop to consider whether you can reduce your own greenhouse gas emissions by, letสผs say, driving even just slightly less, installing a heat pump or adjusting your indoors temperature slightly to reduce energy usage, never mind larger scale changes like switching from a car to a bicycle or downsizing to a smaller home. No, letสผs instead focus on ripping apart the society we have in the _hope_ that this other idea will work out better. Privacy, or the surveillance economy? Instead of taking small steps _toward_ a better place, like choosing to use privacy-conscious and privacy-respecting service providers and products where possible or being careful about what data about others you keep and spread around, instead wash your hands of individual responsibility and demand legal and political changes which _definitely_ wonสผt happen in years. (The GDPR took over six years from first proposal to enacted legislation, even _with_ a political desire in that direction, and even that built on and expanded upon earlier legislation.) Big Tech? Obviously _all_ even technology-adjacent companies are equally evil to the core, so again, letสผs not even take the steps we _can_ take toward a better place and avoiding (let alone just reducing our use of) the _worst_ of them. **Can you see how this gets annoying after a while?** It might well be the case that none of the available choices in a niche are perfect; but even the Borg see perfection as _a goal to strive towards_ , not something which must be achieved in every aspect of every single step of the way toward the goal for a step to be taken at all. If individual choices donสผt matter now, then how come individual choices mattered during the build-up to the current situation? Correspondingly, if individual choices _did_ matter previously, then what inherent about our world has changed such that individual choices _no longer_ matter? Such that the total is no longer even approximately proportional to, let alone equal to, the sum of the parts? "But companies are gonna company!", I hear. And while it is true that there are several huge companies that have grown huge by developing a blatant disregard for the people that make their business model possible, that is no reason why it must be that way in every case. We can and should demand better, and in a market-esque economy, the way to do that is by _showing_ demand for better. In our present-day world, companies ultimately exist to make money for their owners, generally by providing a product or service which someone is willing to pay for and in so doing providing a means of livelihood for the actual people putting effort into providing that thing in the form of exchanging money for peopleสผs time. Some companies do so by only meeting the absolute minimum requirements of the applicable legislation; sometimes even less than that. Some companies see a niche in providing stronger privacy, a more environmentally conscious way of performing their core business, a more maintainable/repairable/higher quality product, a more personalized service, paying their employees more, or whatever else the case might be. Usually the latter means that what they offer is a bit more expensive, not exclusively but certainly in some part because they donสผt externalize those costs onto society as a whole or do things like sell services to others based on surveillance of their users. But if we were to somehow get a world in which no company can do those undesirable things, _that higher cost would be the norm anyway_. In many cases, actively choosing the less immediately costly option not only reduces the incentive for change toward a desirable direction, but also normalizes _and actively supports_ precisely the undesirable state of affairs. Change is far from always convenient, but that doesnสผt mean that change is meaningless or impossible _even at_ an individual level. There certainly are situations where we, _individually_ , are not in a position to effect meaningful change. (Though we often can still argue for change, and we certainly donสผt need to go all-in with the worst of it just because we have to go along with some of it.) I am also certainly among the first to concede that individual changes wonสผt solve everything. Some issues likely actually require not only individual but also societal changes to fully resolve, and legislation very likely will be a part of that. The GDPR, for example, has its problems, but there is no denying that it has moved the needle. So has seatbelt regulations for cars. _But we still have to start somewhere. If we arenสผt willing to make even small changes individually to work toward a better (or even only less bad) situation, then why is it right to demand of others that everyone makes large changes in an individual hope that doing so will lead to a better situation?_ Next time you find yourself saying something to the effect of that individual changes and individual choices donสผt matter even a little because the scale of the total change desired is too large for any one individual, stop to ask yourself if maybe you are saying that just because you donสผt want to be inconvenienced yourself. Because doing nothing, or staying with the status quo, just because what any one individual can do wonสผt solve _everything_ _perfectly_ (even if we can somehow all agree on the separate matter of what a perfect solution looks like) is more or less guaranteed to _not_ help anyone even _toward_ a solution to _something_. And only screaming at the top of your lungs for large-scale societal change while simultaneously refusing to make even the slightest individual change in the direction you are advocating for is basically just externalizing the cost of change onto others. To borrow from _Life is Victorious! How to Grow through Grief_ by Diane Kennedy Pike as quoted by Quote Investigator: "Be the change you want to see happen instead of trying to change everyone else." Who knows; if you lead the way by example, then maybe quite a few will follow. Itสผs impossible to know whether thatสผs the case without showing that alternatives actually are possible. Go ahead. Go make a small change toward even just a little bit better to something which is under your personal control. Try that change out for a while. If it works for you, keep it. If for some reason it doesnสผt, revert it, or better yet change further based on what youสผve learned. Then go change something else.

Quit saying that individual choices are meaningless
