a chart of fatalities by passenger miles. motorcycles have 212 per billion passenger miles. buses and trains have respectively 0.14 and 0.31
there's that word "safety" again. I'll just leave this here. motorcycles are over 60x as deadly to ride vs. driving a car and over 680x as deadly to ride as buses or trains (source: turbli.com/blog/the-saf...). ride one if you want, but it will never be the choice for safety

it doesn't work because I'm not in the way of those motorcycles. neither are the dozens of other people who live on my block or the thousands of people all along this arterial who all get to hear all the motorcycles that go by. neither are all the pedestrians
I ride a nearly silent RadExpand 5

and yet somehow I've managed to bike everywhere I need to go (work, errands, leisure) without annoying anyone. I live on an arterial and every day I hear tons of loud engines. it doesn't last for five seconds, it lasts for thirty or more, over and over

riding a bike is how I travel. I don't own a car. if you want to have a dangerous hobby that's your prerogative, but it's disrespectful to annoy everyone else because you think it makes your dangerous hobby slightly safer

well you seemed to be claiming either that when it's more difficult to drive you don't go slower or that when you go slower it is somehow more dangerous than when you go faster

a chart showing that a person being hit by a car driving at 20 mph is 90% likely to survive, but at 30 mph only 60% likely to survive and at 40 mph only 20% likely to survive
it actually makes them more safe to drive. the slower you go, the more reaction time you have and the less lethal your car is to bikers and pedestrians

Something new is coming to one of Seattleโs most historic neighborhoods.
Weโre installing a protected bike lane from Occidental Ave S to the waterfront, closing a critical gap in the City Center Bike Network!

that is a feature. making places difficult to drive makes them safer and more pleasant to walk and bike. and when cars do drive there, they often driver more slowly and carefully. you should not need a car for 99% of tasks in a city

if you want to be safe, donโt ride the most dangerous possible vehicle you could. ride actual bikes (bicycles) and take buses and trains. riding a super dangerous vehicle then annoying everyone within a quarter mile to make it marginally safer is just selfish

and bikers are at risk from injuries! bigger trucks and SUVs can easily knock those barriers over a few feet. sounds to me like we need even more speed reduction and traffic calming

I think thatโs definitely worth knocking on their window and letting them know. the last thing a Seattleite wants is to make conversation with a random stranger so just talking to them should be punishment enough

I mean yeah if you log into a known account with a supposedly "private" setup you're undoing a whole lot. but as long as you don't log in anywhere and you block location grabbing and tracking then I feel like you should be pretty safe?
