That perception does need to change. In places it has, and then we need Design to step up and not be a blocker.

I have seen a lot of design teams fall back to research when they should be experimenting and moving things forward.

I think it’s more a case of trying and trying until you finally get the right balance.

The first team had 4 UCD professionals in it. They just never got to grips with the problem, and never felt safe to move into any kind of ideation or testing phases.

It’s not supposed to be depressing though. As much as I find the situation frustrating things have definitely moved on.

I think a few years back leadership wasn’t open to real change. Now I think people really are, but we’re not making the most of the opportunities.

So I agree we need to invest in training people whether they are in UCD roles or other.

Running design workshops is definitely a valid thing for designers to do.

But running workshops in general is something almost any role could be responsible for.

How come?

It's time to get serious about design Design in government has lost its way. We’ve invested in discovery, compliance, and delivery, but not in creativity.
