Happy Valentine’s Day!

My wife was reading to the girls tonight, & Sawmi my 6 yo started crying, then I read the epilogue & we just wept. This was such a beautiful & fun graphic novel, but that ending just had us missing our kitty, Oscar.

Even the idea of fake sci-fi fascists has worn itself thin over 13 years with these sleeves.
Because the real world keeps echoing the same playbook—and I’m tired.
New sleeves. Same deck. Same joy. Clearer head.

Goodbye for now buddy. Find a warm spot to nap, a neighborhood to roam, a little girl to nuzzle, a nice lady to sit next to, another cat to bug, & a papa to pet you. On this side of the life’s curtain, you always found a way back to us, but soon we’ll find our way back to you. 🐈❤️

An abandoned furball that found its way to the Dean Farm & into Lora's life & eventually into mine. Though we are heartbroken because he was a very very very good buddy, we are even more grateful today because a cat named Oscar loved us all so very much.

He hopped onto bed whenever he sensed we were sad, crying or breakfast was running late. He was never just a cat, he was a part of the Zaidarhzauva’s.

Oscar crawled on top of us when we sat down for our late night tv or video games. He waddled into the presence of our guests and wore his orange fur like a royal cape. He sat by me for 8 years as I started working from home, demanding cameos on Zoom & Google Meet.

Oscar was a part of this family. His paw prints & belly fuzz are all over the house and our lives. His patience for the kids grew as their chubby baby hands started to rain kitty treats towards him.

We said goodbye to our sweet buddy Oscar. He was 14, loving, gentle, goofy and hungry boi. I wept because for the past 12 years, he was my little buddy who sat next to me as I worked, played video games & went through my cards. I miss him & hope I’ll see him again one day. #cats

“It’s not that deep bro”… but it is to me.

I love this game. And I love that I’m still learning it—every day—through new universes and old planes I get to revisit with fresh eyes.

This is more a note to myself: if you want people to care, help them connect. Bring them from their world into yours. Give them something familiar to hold while they learn the weird, beautiful complexity you’re obsessed with.

And this isn’t me trying to make a whole “Universes Beyond / Fortnite-ification of MTG” post.

It’s not that returning players or new players don’t respect original MTG worlds. We do. But when the game feels so intensely complicated, seeing something you already know and love becomes a bridge. It turns this massive rulebook of a hobby into something you can grab onto.

First pack in, I was cooked. Hooked.

It was the lore. Not just “oh cool, I recognize that,” but I actually knew what the cards were referencing—and then seeing that story translate into gameplay? That clicked a part of my brain Magic hadn’t touched before.

Back in July 2023… I had just finished Lord of the Rings and then the set dropped. I’d never spent more than $50 on Magic, and I’d basically been out of the game for almost 10 years… and somehow I still ended up buying two Collector Booster boxes.
