My 5 year old twins are having trouble picking just *one* woman for their Women's History Month school project & I couldn't be prouder of them that *this* is the difficulty they're having

(and yes, this is 100% me just finding an excuse to brag about them)

I don't remember much from the AP Stats exam from all those years ago, but I do remember the strange near silence of focus & clacking of calculator keys while the 7 of us in the room entered in our data

being a parent is magical but damn the plagues they bring home with them
of the past 4 weeks, i think i've been sick w/different things for ~3 of them

being sick like this is no funβ€” body just wants to rest & can't do/focus on anything

Building your 'poor' imitation is so important

Agreed that it is concerning if that early step ends up getting missed because the tool can just do it

Yeah!
I've actually started using it as my main 'side project' IDE for some tools I've been building (I especially like the 'manager' concept for UI since that's not my specialty at all)

But this was probably the first *useful* project I did with it where I probably wouldn't have done it myself

Looking to get a Steam Deck for my wife & of course I waited until there are supply issues..

Missed it once already when it went in stock so coded a quick script w/ Antigravity yesterday to email me if it comes back.
100% wouldn't have made the script if most of the code wasn't scaffolded for me

Text with "similar to hearing bilingual children" highlighted in green.

Text with "similar to hearing bilingual children" highlighted in green. Full text: are similar to hearing bilingual children, who also often exhibit purported 'delays' in language and literacy development (Holcomb & Lawyer, 2020). Instead of taking hearing-based reading instruction as a starting place, some states are working to develop guidance uniquely suited for deaf children (e.g., Minnesota Department of Education, 2025).

For a deaf or hearing child who arrives at kindergarten with a clear and strong command of spoken English, the child can recruit knowledge of spoken English to make sense of the text by decoding print into a form they already understand. For these children, reading instruction strategies are designed to build on the explicit skills that they
already have. However, we cannot assume that it will work for deaf children who do not
use spoken English.
If a deaf child is fluent in a sign language like ASL but does not have auditory
access to spoken English, the answers to these three core questions are quite different,
demanding a different scope and sequence in reading instruction. This child brings a
wealth of knowledge about how language works, and the goal of instruction is to learn a
second language: written English (Howerton-Fox & Falk, 2019). In this case, decoding is
not a central skill for reading and writing, as the child does not need to translate between
the written code and spoken form of English, but rather they are learning English as a
language directly through sign and print (refs). As a
result, the scope and sequence should be structured to help the child leverage their pre-
existing language and communication skills to support their effort to simultaneously learn
reading skills and written English as a second language. Using foundational sign
language skills in a bilingual education setting can support literacy development
(refs).
For children with language deprivation who are fluent in neither a spoken nor a
sign language, the approach to building a bridge between children’s pre-existing skills
and desired learning outcomes will again differ. For these children, teachers must focus
first and foremost on meeting the child’s basic language and communication needs by
immersing them in a language-rich environment (Holcomb et al., 2023b), which can then
serve as the foundation for other aspects of learning and development, including reading.

Article is super helpful w/ sourcesβ€” in short, being flexible according to the deaf child's language skills and using bilingual strategies (which feels like a big 'duh')

I keep thinking of 'ASL ABC stories' & 'ASL rhymes' (apple & onion). It'd be cool to see curriculum designed for fluent signers

Always wondered about the techniques for learning how to read w/o a focus on phonics (for deaf children). I'm pretty naive, so I only really know the evidence of phonics for hearing children

I hope we can avoid the mistakes of the 'oralism' days & get language to everyone w/ whatever it takes

Opened 2-rack dishwasher with packaging and yellow energy star tag ($34 estimated yearly cost; 240 kWh per year)

Installed a new dishwasher myself today
See? I can do non-computer stuff too!

And I know this is really small but stuff where I have to rewire & do some plumbing makes me think 'what else can I do around the house?'

(Also, this non-fancy dishwasher is too fancy for meβ€” it's got a light inside!)

I'm 100% a descriptivist & find different linguistic rules fascinating!

Double negatives & 'finna' have their own rules but are often not considered 'proper grammar' which is ridiculous. Hell, I've even been criticized on my 'like'

Also why I love manual languages like ASL which evolve so fast!

22.02.2026 16:48 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

To be clear, I'm totally with youβ€” grammar & accent criticisms can just encourage keeping the divide between arbitrary groups

I've always enjoyed having variety in language & would never 'correct' someone's grammar. I grew up speaking 'improperly' but recognized 'rules' for writing

(Funny enough, I'm nearly certain I picked this up during my physics undergrad. We also had a technical writing class where it was discussed whether to use 'farther' or 'further' when referring to 'spacetime' lol)
