Return to profitability, the power of focus, the importance of investing and my plan for next months

February has been a good month for me
One of the best since I have started this blog
And I feel momentum like I never did before

Everything in my latest blog post ‡️

Controversial but I hate mortgages

Most people I know find a job, get married and lock themselves in a mortgage for 30 years
They can't leave their job, even if they hate it, and can't take risks for decades, in their most active years

A house is not worth losing your freedom

I failed all my 2025 goals
Wanted to get to $1k MRR, barely got to $200

Then I realized that I didn't need to find something new
I just needed to double down on what was already working

Now at $450 MRR and the $1k goal looks much closer now

Tourism rise has made the country a low-added value service economy
That's why we have low salaries
We still have highly skilled people but the best of course leave and never come back so they won't educate the next generation
Eventually skilled people will disappear and we'll see the real decline

One of things people say about Italy is that we have the lowest number of graduates in Europe

The things is Italy's economy doesn't need educated people
You don't need a degree to make a pizza, serve a table, drive a boat and so on

I set a $400 target for February
And I went beyond my expectations with $460 in royalties

I'm almost halfway to my yearly target
$1k/month

Next month target $600
Gotta be ambitious

I invested in the Russian market in 2021
I lost everyhting when tensions escalated
It's the same with China now
A little escalation and your broker will stop trading the assets
And you lose all your money

If you wanna diversify buy gold, silver, crypto

True story happened to me not long ago

Senior Data Engineer interview with HR
Freelance contract

"What's your rate?"
"400/day"
"Oh no too expensive..."
"What's your budget?"
"150/day"
"..."
"Ok we tried"

Guess the country

New book published
Italian market only
Very low competition niche
Written 80% with AI
$0 Production cost
Took me 2-3 weeks of work almost every night

I'm very tired but happy and hopeful for this one
Now comes the hard part, marketing!

Senior ML Engineer
Milan vs Berlin
Salary 2x more in Berlin

If Europe is cooked then Italy is competely burned

PS: don't tell me the cost of living is also 2x

Italy has too many graduates?

Too many graduates compared to the country’s economic system
Which is a cross between an amusement park and a geriatrics ward

Plus everybody thinks the country is the Eternal Guardian of World Culture, which doesn't help with innovation at all

Everybody thinks cooking is a waste of time
Quite the opposite

My best ideas come when I slow down and spend 1 hour cooking a nice meal
Saves me a lot of wasted effort and helps me go in the right direction
Best ROI of the day

I wish I was like my boomer colleagues who put on a shocked face when I used to tell them the rental prices in Florence
The city where they bought their homes at normal prices 30 years ago

I'd give up all the technology, Ryanair, Netflix in the world to reach this level of detachment from reality

Publishing more books, reducing costs, improving ads and looking for new marketing avenues

This has been the focus of my side gigs in January
Still in the red but better than December

POV: you find a book with reviews like this that makes $300/day
New genre, people are starving for a sequel but it doesn't come before May

I am gonna publish 3 books in the same niche in the meantime
Pretty confident they will bang

Posted my first job offer on Upwork
Invited 6 freelancers who had skills
3 replied
1 of them understood the assignment
He charges 3x the others

You really don't need much to freelance
Choose a good niche, follow instructions, you have zero competition

This is the book that got me started on the solopreneurship journey
It was 2017
I bought it in Waterstones at the Leadenhall Market in London
I was still working as a Data Scientist at a startup
It's been 10 years
I failed a lot
But I am still here
Like a cockroach
