It feels like this is so extra but yeah I’ve had a toxic relationship with the whole industry and am sick of seeing the “stakeholders” benefit- social media, advertisers, etc.

So just gonna focus on paying my bills and building/ supporting real people in real life and talking about nerd stuff

The funny thing is I only got into journalism cos I wanted to talk about science. I love science and physics, along the way I got swept up in storytelling and society, politics, news, culture. Because of who I am I have been dragged into culture war after culture war for my whole adult life

I have to apply for teacher training and am looking into bursaries etc to fund my training from the Institute of Physics but yeah I guess this summer is my last hurrah in smacking my head against the wall! I’m not giving up the fight - just trying something new for me.

My friends and family who have experience in/ teaching have warned me! I know it is not going to be easy but it does mean I am afforded a level of financial stability and hopefully it will be a career that sees me on the receiving end of less hate!

Sadly, the industry relies heavily on freelancers who are able to work for free or very little. I can’t do that so found myself over working. I can’t allow the impact it is having on my mental and physical health to continue in the way it has been

Told one of my regular commissioners “my resilience has limits and I yearn for the quiet life of boring teenagers to sleep talking about physics 😂”

I’m still “around” until September but very much hoping to be able to be less reliant on the gig economy of journalism in the not-so-distant future!

We love how easy it is to add alt text on Bluesky, but there are still a lot of account sharing images who don't use it as standard. Alternative text helps anyone using assistive technology to understand what is in the image, even if they can't see it, making the post more inclusive. 1/
