i think my problem with shows that start episodic then slowly get more serialized is that they often switched what they were doing on a dime. a big plot revelation in one episode then going back to the episodic lower stakes formatting creates a tonal whiplash that is often very jarring

My 5 star review of American History X on Letterboxd. "This is a harrowing movie. It asks questions that I don't have an answer for, the kinds of questions that make you uncomfortable on a visceral, gut level. I'm from Kentucky. It's hard to be around any of my extended family without seeing newscasters on Fox News or the god damn fucking President spouting the exact same rhetoric that you see the skinheads in this movie espouse. The same bullshit every day. Looking at the people who're supposed to care about you, gazing through the blinds of the closet to see them agreeing with those who want you dead, but deep down inside you want to believe there's a part of them that can change, that can do better. Is that apologia? Is that wrong? I understand there's a difference between rhetoric and action— what Norton does is terrible, but at every turn we see his beliefs tear apart his family, tear apart him. When you've done something truly horrible, how do you repent? I don't think there will ever be a truly right answer to that question. It's hard not to feel a sense of conflict writing this, that I sound like some passive liberal who dreams of deprogramming the hateful with a well crafted argument, or some make believe bullshit like that, when I should know better as a leftist. Some people you just cant change. But I believe that if I ever lose that hope that at least for one person out there that change is possible, I'd be losing a part of myself. I can't remember the last time a movie made me have an internal reckoning like this, but that's why we watch movies, right? That's why we make art."
