The Global Battery Technology Frontier - Battery energy density, cost curves and chemistry evolution from 2008โ€“2026. A frontier analysis of the technologies powering the Bettrification era.

You may have noticed me sharing battery charts lately. Theyโ€™re all part of a new page on my site: The Global Battery Technology Frontier.

Key takeaways:

๐Ÿ”‹ Battery capability cost โ†“ ~99% since 2008
โšก Energy density pushing toward ~500 Wh/kg
๐Ÿ“ˆ Cost curves โ€” not breakthroughs โ€” drive #Bettrification

BYD unveils Blade Battery 2.0: 10-70% in 5 mins, 10-97% in 9 mins, and 20,000 flash charging stations in 2026 BYD's Blade Battery 2.0 charges 10-90% in 9 mins, pioneers smart, swift flash charging network.

BYD just dropped a huge EV announcement.

๐Ÿ”‹ Blade Battery 2.0 โ€“ 210 Wh/kg (LFP)
โšก 10โ€“70% charge in ~5 min
โšก 10โ€“97% in ~9 min
โšก ~1.5 MW flash charging
โšก 1000V EV platform

Fast charging is approaching petrol refuelling times.
But the real story is the system architecture behind it. โšก๐Ÿ”‹ #Bettrification

Energy used to run on geopolitics.

โžœ Endless wars
โžœ Petrostate extortion
โžœ Regime changes
โžœ Middle East volatility

Solar, wind & batteries run on physics. โšก๐Ÿ”‹๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

One depends on chokepoints. The other is everywhere. Thatโ€™s the real energy transition. #Bettrification

In 2008, EV battery capability cost $14.15 per km of range.

By 2026 itโ€™s $0.18, while median range rose from 100 km to 500 km. Thatโ€™s a ~99% collapse in cost and 5ร— growth in performance.

Cost curves create adoption curves โ€” and adoption curves reshape industries. #Bettrification

Batteries arenโ€™t improving โ€” theyโ€™re crossing capability thresholds.

160 Wh/kg โ†’ early EVs
300 Wh/kg โ†’ mainstream EVs
500 Wh/kg โ†’ lithium-metal frontier
750 Wh/kg โ†’ regional electric flight

Each step unlocks an entirely new industry. Disruption compounds. #Bettrification

For 100 years energy meant: Oil fields. Tankers. Aircraft carriers. Wars over supply.

Now it's ~ Sun โ˜€๏ธ Wind ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ EVs โšก

Energy is becoming local, abundant & hard to control.
Thatโ€™s why the old system fights it.

Energy independence is the real disruption #Bettrification

Some people think #EV adoption is driven by politics and โ€œwoke culture.โ€

Theyโ€™re wrong. Itโ€™s driven by cost curves & economics.

Battery cost: $1415/kWh โ†’ $90/kWh
Energy density: 120 โ†’ 480 Wh/kg
Range: 100 km โ†’ 500 km
Sales: 500 โ†’ 20,000,000
18 years โ†’ 6500ร— disruption.

Thatโ€™s #Bettrification โšก๐Ÿ”‹

Since 2008, cost of #EV battery capability โ€” measured as $ per kilometre of range โ€” has collapsed by ~99%.

Range rises 100 โ†’ 500 km
Energy density rises 120 โ†’ 480 Wh/kg
Costs collapse $1414 โ†’ $90

Thatโ€™s the economic engine of #Bettrification.
Disruption follows cost curves.

Norway just hit 98% EV market share in February. 7,127 EVs registered. ICE + hybrids barely 2%.

Tesla led with 1,210 sales (16.6%) after a VAT-distorted January. And yes โ€” they work perfectly in snow, ice & Arctic winters.

The future of transport isnโ€™t coming. Itโ€™s already here.โšกโ„๏ธ #Bettrificationv

Solar ~ useless when the sun isnโ€™t shining.
Wind ~ useless when itโ€™s calm.
Food ~ useless when youโ€™re not hungry.

Electric grids balance supply & demand across multiple generators โ€” thatโ€™s how power systems have always worked.

The difference now?

The fuel is free. #Bettrification

Oil needs warships. Solar, wind & batteries donโ€™t.

20% of global oil flows through one narrow strait. Tankers. Navies. Missiles. Risk premiums.

Sunlight isnโ€™t shipped. Wind isnโ€™t escorted. Storage isnโ€™t blockaded.

Energy security is being rewritten. #Bettrification #Renewables #LFP #BESS #EVsโšก๐Ÿ”‹๐ŸŒ

UK grid didnโ€™t collapse. Early March. Solar pushing ~3GW โ€” double gas. Wind doing the heavy lift.

This is a country that once leaned heavily on fossil fuels. Now 0% coal.

70%+ renewables isnโ€™t theory. Itโ€™s transition in motion. Wait till summer + storage scale. #Bettrification

For 100+ years fossil fuels had subsidies, tax breaks, military protection, pollution externalized & zero carbon pricing. Renewables and EVs get a short-term rebate and suddenly itโ€™s โ€œmarket distortion.โ€ If combustion was truly superior, it wouldnโ€™t need a century of life support. #Bettrification โšก

If your environmental strategy is โ€œuse less electricity,โ€ youโ€™re arguing for stagnation.
Electrification + decarbonisation is the path.
Not nostalgia for combustion.

Gas doesnโ€™t need to disappear to lose power โ€” it just needs to lose hours. As batteries shave peaks & cover the evening ramp, theyโ€™re pushing gas back into the bottle in Australia, displacing it from marginal price-setting intervals. Once storage owns 4โ€“6hrs, gas loses leverage fast. #Bettrification

Sure, ICE โ€œwonโ€ in 1910 because energy density, refuelling speed and infrastructure werenโ€™t even close for batteries. Oil was cheap, abundant and easy to transport. It made sense then.

But technology doesnโ€™t freeze in time. What won in 1910 doesnโ€™t automatically win in 2026.

02.03.2026 09:19 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Exactly โ€” EVs arenโ€™t new. They actually predate mass-market gasoline cars. What changed wasnโ€™t the motor, it was energy density. Early batteries couldnโ€™t compete with liquid fuel. Now they can โ€” and that flips the equation.

Imagine weโ€™re all driving silent electric carsโ€ฆ and some rogue engineer bursts in: โ€˜Hear me out โ€” what if we power it by detonating flammable liquid thousands of times per minute and carry 60 litres of it under the passengers?โ€™ Weโ€™d call it insane. Circuit breaker hit at the NYMEX WTI open. A ยฑ10% move within a rolling 60-min window triggers a 2-min halt โ€” tripped on the initial volatility burst. Last trigger? April 20, 2020 โ€” COVID storage crisis and liquidity collapse. Oil = geopolitics + leverage. Solar doesnโ€™t trip circuit breakers. #EVs

Blast from the past: 1973 OPEC embargo. 1979 Iranian revolution. Oil supply weaponised & prices surge 4x. Stagflation tore through economies & families got smashed at the bowser. You paid or you parked. No exit ramp. No alternative. Just dependence on geopolitics. #Bettrification #EV #Solar

The 40c Smile: Immunity From Oil Shocks - Oil shocks hit households. EVs donโ€™t. How electric vehicles insulate you from war-driven fuel spikesโ€”and offer the first real consumer exit in 100 years.

Iran war = gas price shock incoming. ICE drivers brace. EV drivers plug in. Oil ties your budget to conflicts 8,000km away, shipping lanes, petrostates & war premiums. Electricity ties you to the panel on your roof & infrastructure already built. Not ideology > insulation + control. #Bettrification

If I wanted to sit on 60 litres of explosive liquid & a hot metal box full of mini detonations, Iโ€™d join a demolition crew. I just want to get to the beach. Internal combustion: thousands of explosions per minute. But sureโ€ฆtell me again which car is the fire risk. Stay safe in an EV! #Bettrification

As of 2025, global solar capacity is ~2.5 TW. Just 10 years ago it was ~300 GW โ€” and only ~1 TW in 2022. By 2026, weโ€™re on track for 3.5 TW. No other energy technology in history has scaled this fast. This is the fastest shift to a new form of generation ever. #Bettrification #Disruption #Solar
