Art meets housing policy.

Thank you to Camille Pahl for this beautiful illustration capturing the vision behind SB 79 β€” more homes near transit and stronger communities.

We proudly support SB 79!

City: We unanimously declare a climate emergency! We must make change no matter what the cost, humanity's survival depends on it!
Community: Can we put in a protected mobility lane?
City: No, we'll lose parking spots

Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: Walk Bike Berkeley: Hopkins Teach-In. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting. When Hopkins is repaved, it should receive pedestrian, bicycle, and transit improvements consistent with Council-approved plans and policies. Bicycle improvements should provide low stress connections...

Hopkins Street is back, but the news isn’t good. A new proposal would pave the street without previously-approved bicycle and transit improvements.

Learn more at our Hopkins Teach-In on Monday, March 9 at 7-8pm (virtual).

I saw Hoppers this weekend and I loved it. If you like cute beavers and environmental themes and hate the building of excessive amounts of car-oriented infrastructure, you might love it too

Do car-free zones hurt disabled people? We asked experts. City planners and advocates are seeing "accessibility used as a political football."

β€œβ€¦disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people and more likely to get around by walking and rolling and taking transit. Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folks…”

cyclists riding in protected bike lane

A protected bike lane on 30th Street in San Diego increased cycling to more than 130,000 trips per year within four years.

After construction, usage rose by 120% in the first year and continued to grow.

A two-column reference chart titled "DOs and DON'Ts: Framing and Terminology" for pro-housing messaging. The left column (green, labeled "Do") recommends everyday, friendly language, while the right column (gray, labeled "Don't") lists jargon, scare tactics, and anti-housing frames to avoid. Examples of preferred vs. avoided terms include: "Housing shortage" instead of "Housing crisis"; "More choices and availability" instead of "Building and construction"; "Homes" instead of "Units"; "Displacement" instead of "Gentrification"; "Duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, and townhomes" instead of "Missing middle"; "Affordable/unaffordable" instead of "Expensive/inexpensive"; and "Allow homes of all shapes and sizes" instead of "End single-family zoning." The chart contains approximately 20 term pairs total, guiding advocates to use people-centered, accessible language when discussing housing policy.

"Can we adjust to bike lanes in our own neighborhood?

Yes, we can. We can do this. We have to do it. We have to make adjustments that are uncomfortable in our own neighborhoods. Because we have to do our part on this."

- former Berkeley resident Sophie Hahn, May 2022

Too often the City of Berkeley takes action on street safety only after someone has been killed or hurt. Our #visionzero strategy is literally ambulance chasing.

Mayor Mamdani wants to be proactive. Maybe @adenaishii.bsky.social will too. And not just with daylighting, which is already state law.

Save bike and transit improvements on Hopkins Street! In a stunning reversal of an earlier 8-1 council vote, the Berkeley City Council is proposing to move forward on Hopkins Street repaving without any bike or transit infrastructure improvements. There...

If you are also pissed off about Berkeley leaders doing backwards shit when it comes to street safety, send a letter before Monday. Do it now! actionnetwork.org/letters/save...

I was mad but not surprised when Sophie Hahn used her power to keep bike lanes from being installed on my high-injury street but for this to be coming from Rashi feels like a betrayal.

Berkeley will never make progress if its leaders do stupid shit like letting the NIMBYS win.

I'm so disoriented by this, partially because 3/4 of the cosponsors claim to be pro-bike. I voted for 2 of them and helped get them elected partially because of that.

As if the dearth of consequences for Trump's misdeeds is not discombobulating enough, I apparently live in a city where our political third rail is putting bike lanes on a high-injury street.

Just over a week ago a kid was hit by a car less than 50 ft from my house. (good news: they walked away)

It's still against the law to go when the bus's red lights are flashing right?? I wonder sometimes if the rules have changed because so many drivers act as though stopping for the bus is optional
