And the root cause, according to Dr Ralph Chami: anything we can kill or extract from the ocean, we can value; but the living, thriving ocean is not valued as an asset.

Wonderful quote at #worldoceansummit on marine conservation financing: the ocean doesn’t need our sympathy; it needs to be respected as a valuable, irreplaceable asset.
- Ian McFadzen, CEO, Ocean Conservation Trust (UK)
Great quote from @worldwildlife.org ‘s excellent Lucy Holmes at @theeconomistevents.bsky.social’s #WorldOceanSummit: to solve global environmental problems, incrementalism is no longer an option.
Terrific conversation about governing the central Arctic Ocean before industrialization from Sheena Kennedy from Oceans North #wos2026
The BBNJ Treaty affects 95% of the world’s biosphere by volume!
Great point by @noc.ac.uk ‘s Alex Rogers at @theeconomistevents.bsky.social World Ocean Summit. #worldoceansummit
A return to traditional fishing methods may be needed to reduce bycatch of Risso’s dolphins and angel sharks in Irish crayfish fisheries

How policy hurts the ecosystems. “Revising the ESA to expand exemptions prioritizes short-term economic interests over science, threatening coral reefs, eroding marine mammal protections” #OneHealth @naohun.bsky.social @oceansinitiative.org www.sciencemagazinedigital.org/sciencemagaz...
A flyer for a fish biomechanics course at the Friday Harbor Labs this summer.
Every other summer we run a fish biomechanics course at Friday Harbor Labs. It is an awesome opportunity to learn the tools of biovisualization while experiencing the rich fish diversity of the Salish Sea. Come join us!

“…an unusual fluency across domains” is both a lovely phrase and an understatement, @mongabay.com. Science. Policy. Law. Diplomacy. All while being extraordinarily gracious and generous with her time, knowledge, and network. We’re so glad to have known her. We’ll miss her.
And in solidarity, we can never give up trying to stop and reverse the biodiversity crisis. Until a species is extinct, we’re not giving up on reversing population declines and protecting and restoring habitats. Onward! 🌊💙
NCAR is quite literally our global mothership.
Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.
Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.
Unbelievable.
It is hard to overstate how critical @ncar-ucar.bsky.social is to climate science in the US and around the world. It's the beating heart of our field. Generations of scientists have trained there, and almost everyone I know relies on deep collaborations with NCAR scientists. It's end is unthinkable.
We love this! 100 scientists share the kids’ books that inspired their careers. What a gift list!

Traveling with fish-eating killer whales provides a refuge from the mammal-eating killer whales. The dolphins may be searching for the herring that the Chinook salmon are eating. This also highlights the potential for pathogen transfer across species! academic.oup.com/bioscience/a...
Our Executive Director is quoted in this @nytimes.com article about the study. Some interesting interpretations from dolphin and killer whale researchers www.nytimes.com/2025/12/11/s...
"Forever chemicals" are also "everywhere chemicals". New study finds PFAS and other contaminants in whales and dolphins in coastal and offshore habitats.

So pretty. That’d be a new species for me!
Agree entirely, with the “if I can find it” caveat. I recently saw one where the cited titles were wrong (including the author’s own self-citations), & half the DOIs pointed to the wrong paper. The errors screamed AI reformatting gone wrong, & made me question the entire study.
But it’s going to take a while to start calling Lags “Aethalodelphis”! Lags4ever! 🐬💙
Great job, Dr @erinashe.bsky.social! The #onehealth framing shows how the health of salmon, dolphins, orcas, people, and our shared environment are truly interconnected!
Our paper in Bioscience shows that dolphins carry pathogens that could affect multiple species, plus antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. academic.oup.com/bioscience/a...

Southern resident killer whales need us to redouble our efforts to restore salmon and habitat—or we will lose them
One point missing from this excellent @seattletimes.com editorial: we also need to invest in orca health monitoring

To anyone second-guessing a decision to euthanize, please know that the alternative, suffocation, is an agonizing way for a whale or dolphin to die. May this event help build broader support for welfare considerations surrounding marine mammal bycatch in fishing gear.
The latest efforts to save Hope, the young #humpback whale stranded on an Oregon beach, appear to have failed. A veterinarian is preparing for euthanasia. Amidst the sadness, it’s been inspiring to see so many people invested in this one whale’s fate 🧵
