Our long-standing collaboration with Dr. Corli Coetsee and Dr. Ben Wigley from SANParks is moving forward with promising new research activities. The joint work is focusing on mapping savanna features more accurately such as trees, paths, or animals through innovative combinations of earthβ¦
During recent discussions, new opportunities for collaboration emerged between Navashni Govender, Senior Conservation Manager at SANParks in Kruger National Park, Prof. Katharina Breininger, head of the Pattern Recognition Lab in Informatics, and Dr. Mirjana Bevanda from our Earth Observationβ¦
What a week! Thanks a lot to the team and all partners involved to make this research campaign a success #earthobs #uav #uas #fire @uni-wuerzburg.de @earth-observation.org
Done with training - now it counts!

Wildfires are an essential ecological process in African savannas, shaping landscapes, influencing biodiversity, and playing a key role in nutrient cycling. Understanding their dynamics is crucial for both science and management β and this is where EAGLE MSc student Anna Bischof steps in. As partβ¦
In the past weeks, our research team has been preparing for a unique field experiment investigating how drought and fire influence African savanna vegetation. The work is part of the PhD by Luisa Pflumm, she is supported by our PhD student Antonio Castaneda and his MSc student Anna Bischof. Theβ¦
Some of our researchers are currently conducting field work in Africa on #fire and #drought impact on #savanna #trees - more details soon on www.earth-observation.org
and nice encounters on the way to the study site...
Impressive fires!
After the fieldwork ist before the fieldwork - @antoniocastaneda.bsky.social working on #uas research hardware preparation in #africa
Our UAS research group is currently out in the field collecting a wide range of environmental data. Fieldwork isnβt only about flying drones β it also involves hands-on problem-solving from coding to practical implications, from soldering and repairing to inventing new circuits for measurements.β¦
Burning down the savanna!Currently in the field with Luisa Pflumm, @antoniocastaneda.bsky.social & @annabischof.bsky.social for some first #UAS fire trials before we burn our plots next week. Thanks to the fire team for letting us join! #earthobs #fire #tree @uni-wuerzburg.de @earth-observation.org
Swing by my poster today at the #LPS25!
Excited to share some of our work at the UAS Team, @earth-observation.org ! Weβve been exploring the comparability between UAV-based datasets and Sentinel-2.

with very smooth #lidar & #thermal #uas #earthobservation data acquisitions for snow property research in the #Arctic this weekend thanks to great battery heating boxes and perfect planning by @schwalb-willmann.de & @antoniocastaneda.bsky.social @eor-wuerzburg.bsky.social @uniwuerzburg.bsky.social
Kicking off our field campaign year 2025!
New paper by Fol et al. (2025) estimating that the central Arctic Ocean will be continuously ice free from 2035 onwards, already.
This will have severe impacts on ice-dependent Arctic species.

Line graph time series of daily Arctic temperatures north of 80Β°N latitude for every year from 1958 through 2025. There is a long-term warming trend for every day of the year and a clear seasonal cycle. 2025 is currently much warmer than average.
The temperature spike continues in the high #Arctic... π§ͺβοΈβοΈπ₯Ό

Your support is greatly appreciated for our #UAS #remotesensing #Arctic research @eor-wuerzburg.bsky.social @uniwuerzburg.bsky.social
Thank you UNIS for organizing the snow scooter course! It was a fantastic opportuniy for our Earth Observation staff and EAGLE students to learn new skills in a fun and dynamic setting.
Thanks to @larissabeumer.bsky.social for organizing an incredible workshop on integrating wildlife and snow-ice expertise at UNIS! With great colleagues from Canada to Europe, we explored the potential of collaborativ research. Grateful for the collaboration and insights! #earthobs
