UMass Memorial has shut down their one bottom surgeon, Dr Alford. Surgeries are being canceled and patients with complications can't make follow ups. UMass claims they aren't shutting down their trans health program, but looks an awful lot like compliance in advance to me. Shameful cowardice.

This wouldn't be the first case of providers stopping care in Massachusetts (looking at you, Fenway Health), but this is specifically trans care for adults. MA has some of the best protections for trans folks, but state mandated insurance coverage doesn't matter if there's no one to provide care.

State or city run clinics offer stronger legal protection, sovereign immunity, and long-term sustainability. New York is already building this model. Massachusetts should be next. Fund Providers who refuse to comply: Create an accessible state fund for clinics and providers who are forgoing federal funding to continue providing gender-affirming care. Independent providers are trying to step up but often lack the resources to scale services or engage in extensive grant development. Close the gap in data privacy: Limit the ability of insurance companies to sell All-Claims Payer Data, even when "de-identified." Right now, anti-trans and anti-abortion groups are buying data and using it to re-identify and harass providers. We need shield laws to close the gap on federal misuse and commercial exploitation of health data. Enforce Anti-discrimination Laws: The Attorney General of Massachusetts must investigate and enforce anti-discrimination law when health care providers deny healthcare based on gender identity. Civil rights must be protected even when politically inconvenient or difficult, or else they are meaningless.
