Thrilled to have an opportunity to revisit Wheat and Strategic Competition for @warontherocks.bsky.social w/ Justin Gilpin CEO Kansas Wheat Commission.
We talk a lot about Russia and China and their most recent attempts to use wheat as a tool of statecraft.

Of all the documents we read for "Wheat at War" (available here: www.amazon.com/Wheat-War-Al...), a favorite was from the French Foreign Ministry archives: the list of delegates to the 1916 Paris Economic Conference of the Allied Nations.
It seems Jean Monnet forgot to pay his registration fee ;)
We did the 99 page test for our book Wheat at War. Page 99 jumps right into the shipping problems in WWI. US entry into the war made tonnage concerns SO MUCH WORSE. Interested? See our 99 page test to find out more! page99test.blogspot.com/2025/09/rose...
Our new book, "Wheat at War", was just put through the "Page 99" test!
The test is simple: open any book to page 99. The contents *should* convey the book as a whole. How well did it do? As we explain in the below post, the test worked...to a degree :)
The First World War is a foundational event to the study of international relations. Consequently, it's been seemingly OVER studied.
But that's a big reason that we're proud of the book "Wheat at War". It's hard to say something new about WWI, but I think we did! We hope others feel that way too!
To see how we used the document, you can read "Wheat at War" here (only $10 for the Kindle version)!
To write "Wheat at War", we had to acquire A LOT of documents. A favorite is this letter from Clementel (🇫🇷) to Runciman (🇬🇧). It kick started the negotiations to create the Wheat Executive. It also illustrates the value of "always reach out to the archives" -- as they sent the document for free 😉!
"If this war is to be won, better teamwork between the Allies must be effected."
Those words could well apply to yesterday's "Washington Summit", but they were actually spoken over 100 years ago by Woodrow Wilson's advisor, Edward House.
It's a key quote from our new book "Wheat at War"
"Wheat at War" is a #1 New Release on Amazon (in the Trade and Tariffs category)! Thanks to all who purchased it so far! For those still looking for a copy, the Kindle Version is just $10!
"Wheat at War" is now available!
If you are interested in World War I, the origins of global economic governance, or how food shapes warfare, you'll learn something from this book.
E-book is available today, with the physical copies shipping tomorrow!
Our book, "Wheat at War", will be available this Friday (link soon). What's it about? In many ways, the book's narrative is captured in the below graph (indeed, this graph appears early in the introductory chapter).
Writing "Wheat at War" (to be released this Friday) was special for a host of reasons (including working with @rosellacappella.bsky.social). One of the biggest reasons for me is that it ties together so much of the research work I have done to this point in my career
🧵
I should add that this is just the first of several posts this week as @rosellacappella.bsky.social & I count down to the official book release on Friday!
My cat Shadowfax (yes from LOTR) is into the unboxing of our book! Available digitally and soon in paperback and hard copy. Love going old school with a physical copy in hand!! @profpaulpoast.bsky.social
Always a thrill to unbox my author copies of a new book!
(and always worth the 🙄 from my wife when I say, "Like I always told you, when you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything")
Summer countdown, 1 month until WHEAT AT WAR is out with @profpaulpoast.bsky.social! Check out his webpage to learn all about it!

Almost ready to send the proofs back to OUP!
"Wheat at War" will be coming out in August!
For me, this book (as the subtitle suggests) builds directly on the research in my first three books: war economics + international organizations + alliance formation & coordination.
Thinking about the prospects of waging war with partners? Consider lessons from history about the centrality of logistics! New, from @rosellacappella.bsky.social and me, in an Open Access book about the role of the Marines in future wars, edited by Joanna Siekiera. www.usmcu.edu/Outreach/Mar...
Thrilled that our book, "Wheat at War", is now available for pre-order at @oxfordunipress.bsky.social!
@rosellacappella.bsky.social & I can't wait to share this book with the world in August!
