The crowds were very fickle in that regard, and I was never really sure what Naito had done (if anything) for them to sour on him. I guess the moment had just passed for him as the earnest babyface, which is a shame as I always loved the Stardust Genius.
You can't watch the 2011 G1 final vs Nakamura and not think "this guy is going to be leading the company in a year or less". Then getting injured when they ran the Nakamura match back, less than a month before the Dome, skipping surgery to wrestle his idol Mutoh and making it worse. Terrible luck.
For as big of a star as he is and as important as he was to New Japan, I can't help but see the story of his career as a tragic one of missed opportunities. He was poised to be THE guy, then injuries struck, he held off going under the knife and made it much worse and then Okada leapfrogged him.
