Yesterday at the House Transportation Finance and Policy committee, a bill on autonomous vehicles (pushed by @waymo.bsky.social lobbyists) was heard in the House Transportation committee. We testified against it, and it did not pass!

NEW: JosΓ© Antonio Zayas CabΓ‘n invites me into his home to talk about the return of classic Open Streets events, hosted by his org, Our Streets. Plus he explains how community reaction to a violent occupation shows how "democratized economies" are more resilient.

Pausing the project demonstrates respect for community input by ensuring their vision can actually be implemented, not compromised away in federal negotiations.
Ask MnDOT to pause the project now π

We must pause the project now.
A two-week extension does not equate to meaningful engagement from community members, especially from marginalized communities who've often been harmed and ignored in large transportation projects.
Even if agents are dwindling in size, our most vulnerable communities are still under threat with no eviction moratorium in place. Neighbors continue to show up to keep their each other safe. People do not have the bandwidth or net of safety to engage with decisions on major transportation projects.
Minnesota continues to face terror inflicted by the federal occupation, regardless of the βsurgeβ ending. Yesterday, Minneapolis City Council members Elliot Payne and Jason Chavez gave a brief but significant update from the ACLU in Minnesotaβ907 agents are still here and 407 will remain in March.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) announced an extension of the comment period for the Rethinking I-94 project this morning. The comment period opened on January 6th and originally closed on March 9th. The agency has extended it to March 23rd.
This is not what we asked for.
Our Streetsβ 2026 policy agenda will continue to address the underlying problems with how we invest in transportation, which will help us build a transportation system that works for everyone in the state of Minnesota.

They let Joe Harrington from Our Streets into the MN House transportation committee to tell them about the growing problem of pedestrian and bike fatalities. A "public health epidemic that needs statewide solutions."
Sorry, no car shows. π
After a 2 year hiatus, Our Streets says this year they're back to host the kind of Open Streets you know and love on Lyndale and Cedar.

Today is the first day of the Minnesota legislative session, and Our Streets is prepared to advance legislative priorities for a safe, affordable, and accessible multi-modal transportation system. Listen in to this Streets.mn podcast where our policy manager shares our legislative agenda.
Participate in the Rethinking I-94 Public Comment period still if you have the bandwidth. It ends on March 9.

If we continue now, we signal that federal funding matters more than community vision and local government prioritiesβundermining public trust in transportation planning for years to come.
It is unclear whether the weakened National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reviews are compliant with state environmental review laws. Decisions made under current federal leadership could lock Minnesota into frameworks that persist beyond this administration.
The administration has already paused or revoked billions in previously awarded infrastructure grants, particularly those focused on safety, equity, multimodal transit, and community reconnection, and any federal funding received would come with strings attached.
As the Rethinking I-94 project advances, it becomes increasingly entangled with federal processes and subject to shifting federal priorities.
If we proceed now, we risk spending years and millions of dollars developing a project that serves the Trump administrationβs prioritiesβnot Minnesotaβs.
The public comment period began a day before Renee Good was murdered.
Our most vulnerable communities are still under threat of kidnappings, eviction, lost wages, and long-term health impacts from being terrorized. People just donβt have the bandwidth to engage with major transportation projects.
Take Action: It's time to pause the Rethinking I-94 project.
