After learning that C2E2’s sibling company is involved with data collection for ICE, and finding meaningful ambiguity in their privacy policy regarding data-sharing policies within their parent company, RELX, we reached out to dialogue with C2E2 leadership. We asked for clear, public assurances that convention spaces would be free from ICE presence and enforcement activity. While organizers shared that they have long-standing internal safety protocols and are actively reviewing public-facing policies, they declined to make explicit public commitments regarding ICE presence or cooperation. For our team and much of our community, especially in the face of the horrors that Chicago has been subjected to at the hands of ICE, that lack of clear public assurance creates too much uncertainty. We are a queer and BIPOC-driven company with deep roots in our nerdy Chicago community, and as such we will always stand with people over profits. Rough Magic has decided we cannot in good conscience be involved with C2E2 until all ties with ICE are thoroughly severed, and we have declined our 2026 contract. Rather than asking our community to navigate that uncertainty or skip C2E2 alone, we're building something intentional. During the same weekend as C2E2, we'll be hosting a city-wide charity "con crawl" rooted in community care, mutual aid, and play. Not every vendor, entertainer, and guest had the option or freedom to step away from their contracts. If you are working or attending the convention please stay safe, take care of each other, and keep showing up for justice in the ways that you can. More details on the con crawl coming soon!! ❤️
