I admit to starting my chat with "Hey John, Happy Friday! I have a question and it should be painless. I have this scenario ....."
I do a combo of polite greeting & then straight to the point.
Agree with you on them waiting for a reply. Just tell me what you need, but be nice about it.

Another peeve-- just messaging a question or demand out of the blue w/o a courtesy greeting.
E.g.: "What's the timeline for the next system release?"
Me: "Hey Joe, good to hear from you. The next release is in three weeks."
