I don't believe genAI is "gonna stay" primarily because of the economics. It doesn't matter how "useful" it is if no one can afford to train/run/maintain these things.
It's not inevitable. History is full of examples of us changing our mind on various tech.

Itβs a bit of a nerdy obsession for me that while fashions change, the aesthetic fundamentals are hard wired into us, and nowhere is this more visible than the archaeological record.
Humans like patterns, repetition, scale relationships, symmetry, colour balance, handles and squiggly shapes.

Watching the leadership at my job joke about being addicted due to spending their weekends babysitting agents pumping out code...
I don't have any hope for the tech industry.

I need to check if this is true, since it would suck if I can't use Discord whenever I pop over to the UK. Would this still happen on the browser version?

Another thing is that these tools are not free. By pivoting the software field to focus on AI-first workflows we are, intentionally or not, leaving those who do not have the means to pay for the hardware or cloud AI models behind.
"AI Assisted" is one thing, pivoting entirely is neglectful.

I honestly think social media was a mistake.
All the lost culture and group context is more or less gone, and currently the only thing close to that vibe is Discord.

"ram crisis will force gamedevs optimize their games"
Games aren't optimized because of crunches and bad environment, crisis in industry won't help with it. Dunno why I'm so irritated from such take

There's so many devs that are all-in on the vibe coding side, and putting out so much work that if they are not in AI psychosis crashout, they are basically speedrunning their way towards burning out (if they haven't already).
It's really sad to see...

All the dopamine hits of getting something working without any of the mental labour to ensure it is actually working properly and understanding all the parts.
But nope, I am somehow wrong for not wanting to partake.

God forbid you enjoy cuisine from a diverse set of cultures.
It's basically a form of exceptionalism that makes folks suspect of anything they view not as being "part of their particular culture". Americans in general are particularly inflicted by this to varying degrees.

And addicted to what you might ask? Hmm...

There's also a fair number of good alternatives now, along with self-hostable versions/means. And these alternatives have their own strengths too, so it's no longer a question of Github being "good".
I personally chose tangled.org for the self-hosting repos, but codeberg and others work too.

Funnily enough, I'm using CachyOS on my laptop and Manjaro on my desktop and those have been pretty stable considering.
But that's a choice to live on the bleeding edge. There's more stable but bleeding edge enough options that require less tech know-how to keep things running.
