[In] matters of transition, some gallae did not comply with their physician's demands. You alone held dominion over your body; how and when you shaped yourself belonged to you alone. Good people did not interfere with others' powers of self-creation, or else, like fools in a forge, they would find no one else to blame for their cuts and burns. The gallae and their brothers, the areskoni, were their own forges, smiths and metals. Yet they still required knowledge and tools to shape themselves and become masters of their own lives. Gallae and areskoni often learned the right proportions of herbs and magic from each other, but half-educated hierarchs possessed the keys to the remedies.
