No they didn't. That was a non-binding referendum, and the option to remain a us territory wasn't included. So performative BS.

'Remain a territory/maintain the status quo ' wasn't an option on that ballot. So pretty useless. In the past various pro statehood or pro independence groups boycotted the vote, so accurate results are difficult.
That would mean becoming a state and having 2 more very likely Dem senators. GOP will never go for it, and it's not clear that PR residents want to become a state.
This tax treatment applies to other US territories as well. PR is just a lot closer and more convenient than Guam.
They'll never get built in time. They're a money giveaway to Trump's friends.
Sorry, but why do you consider the present population of PR to be indigenous?
Tax dodging usually means minimizing taxes by legal means. So by definition that can't be illegal. The OP saying that tax dodging should be a capital offense is stupid, unless the OP meant tax evasion.
๐ go vote for Jill Stein some more.
So you think that tax dodging (unclear if the OP meant evasion or avoidance) should carry a possible death penalty? GFY if you really believe that.
Apparently the person blocked me. Can you post the screenshot? I took the post to mean that the only reason someone would move to PR was for the tax breaks, and I took an issue with that. PR is great.
You seem nice. The OP wasn't just talking about JP, they were talking about anyone moving to PR.
Not only illegal but punishable by death.
And we need to clarify if we're talking about tax evasion (illegal) or tax avoidance (legal). If by tax dodging you mean the latter then by definition it can't be illegal.
Would have been much easier to just hit the block button.๐คท
Totally. Not defending JP at all. But it's painting with an awfully wide brush to suggest that expats moving there are doing so primarily for tax break reasons. I'm saying that PR has a lot to offer besides tax breaks.
Ah yes. My racist ideology ๐
Look in the mirror buddy.
Yes, you can choose to take my comment in the worst possible light. I meant that no one would accuse folks of moving to Hawaii for tax breaks. Most of the things people love about Hawaii are also present in PR, so I thought that reducing the decision to just tax breaks was dumb.
That's what I thought. So clever. I know more about PR than you ever will. I used to live there, still visit frequently, and have a lot of friends on the island. Both expats and people whose families have been there since it was Spain. So spare me. You have no idea what you're talking about.
Have you ever lived in PR? Before hurricane Maria in 2017 wrecked things? If not then sit this one out. If you did then you have the memory of a goldfish. DC interference was mostly Strom Thurman slipping in language into a bill that prevented PR from declaring bankruptcy and limited options.
This has been an issue for far longer than a decade, and predates tax acts 20 and 22. A lot of it was self inflicted, though interference from DC wasn't helpful.
When/where did I defend moronic behavior? I made a comment that there was nothing illegal or immoral about moving to PR. That's it.
There are lots of reasons to want to live in PR besides taxes, and that you don't see that says something about you. PR is like Hawaii, except it's a 2 hour flight to the mainland. Fantastic beaches, friendly people, great year round weather, etc.
It was a stupid thing to post, and it would be hilarious if he's run off the island because of that.
There are plenty of reasons to want to live in PR. Your belief that tax breaks are the only or main reason betrays what you really think about PR.
The post (this isn't Twitter) called for executing people who do this? That implies that this should be highly illegal and is immoral, unless you're a total psychopath in favor of the state executing people for no reason.
I don't think that choosing to live in PR for whatever reason is immoral.
The thing is that it's 100% legit, and not a dodge provided that they're on the island at least 186 days out of the year. PR residents don't pay IRS taxes on income derived from PR (no taxation without representation or something). He has to pay PR taxes. But this was so stupid of him to post ๐.
While Trump didn't do PR any favors, this issue long predates Trump.
And using a Volvo instead of a Cat to do it ๐จโ๐ณ๐
No be doesn't. He didn't send the national guard to Chicago because the Illinois governor told him to pound sand. Trump talks a big game but has largely stayed within the legal limits.
States control elections. Trump can't stop them.
Sam Harris is left wing on everything but Israel. Agree on Hasan. Opportunity missed. DNC are fossils.
Fleebag and Better call Saul. Then I forced myself to watch the full first seasons; didn't get better.
Don't you mean Tim Apple?
