Instead of conventional fertilizers, often from slaughterhouse byproducts or petrochemicals, we used a calculated mix of cottonseed meal and alfalfa pellets. Both 100% plant-based, supporting soil life and nutrient availability without the ethical and ecological costs of animal agriculture.
Typically we don’t use offsite amendments—relying fully on on-farm nutrient cycling and natural succession. But for our corn seed project, we decided to invest in a little extra nutrition to give this heirloom crop its best shot.
