A lot of us didn't want this.. And those same of us are always the ones paying the price..

On all the youtube videos that are political, people who aren't from America are always commenting things like "wake up", "how can you let this happen".. And there's something about this that makes me feel really bad..

This thought still haunts me. Why?

Either Ezra Klein is right or he's going to help drive us to the ground. Whatever is the case. His takes are entertaining and the data he presents is definitely A WAY to look at the problem.

Can we at least find the common ground that the welfare of the people around me is also my welfare. Or is that where I'm mistaken and only some have that value

I've found it really hard to understand the why... Why do you believe rounding people up who have spent their lives probably coming here. My family did. How does sending them home mend your hurt. I'm spending my time on r/conservative and I don't get it.

I pray for you, host nation, my new home. I truly do.

Just like where I grew up (10), it breaks the spirit. The human cost and psychological struggle to rise above dictatorship is crippling. I saw the comments under the 'king poster" that was a joke (to own the libs). This triggers 60 years of trauma for me. And I didn't live through about half of it.

In the US we are convinced things that happen to others don't happen to us. This paired with the individualism/selfishness. As long as my life isn't affected, I won't need to break the clan. We wait for the most egregious thing to happen then overcorrect.

And just like where I grew up. They will defend the clan. Claim to be about freedom but praise autocracy because, as long as it is what the clan wants.

I think the more terrifying one is the clan and the tribe. Russia's oligarchy (not the people) through it's actions has always tried to dismantle US influence in the world. We can debate it's flaws but to many it was hope for ideals we've never gotten to enjoy.

I grew up in a diplomatic household. Our dinner talks were things like the 2000 camp David summit. I grew up knowing and understanding the various positions in government around diplomatic corps. It terrifies me in ways I cannot explain that one scolded the head of a nation for political play.

We can't always blame the lack of access to information. Humans defend the clan (or be a passive bystander). (9) this rooted belief that because it is their clan it's better for "yours" (clan) to be in power than the others. Even if you suffer the same economic and social challenges.

02.03.2025 16:08 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

(8) Poke allies start fights, when they talk back you point to the fact that it's you against the world. This further entrenches the clan.

02.03.2025 16:08 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

(7) The first tenet to all of this is to convince people that other people's way of life is a threat to your right to exist. In the US it's pretty much every big debate: abortion, race, guns.

02.03.2025 16:08 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

There is also a weird phenomenon that I'm also witnessing here in the US. (6) There are people who support everything without question. In my home it's due to tribalism, but in the US it's starting to not be any different. It's about the clan and self preservation.

(3) The repression of the media. (4) The misinformation and constantly challenging foundation of reality. And the absolute most dangerous of all. (5) There are people who grew up in the same place and had access to different information.

Everything that is happening in the US is extremely triggering. I've watched this movie before. (1) Installing loyalists in positions of power, (2) political inaction from people of the ruling party even on things that have national backing.

Op-ed: Did Togo's constitutional reforms entrench president's power? In May 2024, Togo's President Faure GnassingbΓ© signed a new constitution, transitioning the country from a presidential to a parliamentary system. Under this new framework, lawmakers are responsible f

Recently the country attempted a switch to parliamentary government. If you continuously own 90% of the seats you give the illusion of democracy, creative ways to be a modern lifetime leader.

2017–2018 Togolese protests - Wikipedia

The father had violent repression. And the son's repression is not so violent.. well at times. Also the number of deaths is reported by government agencies.

The foundation of my country is that we've simply never had free elections. The neighborhood where I grew up is the hq of the resistance. During elections the people in power don't even collect the ballots. We drive it to them.

Togo warned after 'coup' New constitution puts late leader's son in control.

The son took over in a military aided constitutional coup d'etat. Forced his party to elevate him to president of the National Assembly (your version of speaker, also the next in line when the president dies), while the duely elected one was away.

I grew up under a dose of autocracy and dictatorship. The country was led by the same person for 40 years. Then his son took over for the last 20. During his dad's time it was brutal repression.
