It was a fun film, I enjoyed it much.

I think you are underestimating the degree to which U.S. crypto companies were being harassed by Gary Gensler. β€œregulation by enforcement” seemed like a fair label. I think a lot of crypto execs were afraid of going to prison under Biden for no good law. Yes, concentration camps are worse.

Wow, I’m sold on the quiet posters feed.

I agree, Claude Pro feels like a nice amount.

It’s kindof a prisoner’s dilemna, a bit like crossing a picket line. We could all have a more peaceful life if we could just trust each other to agree to too, but of course, who could trust all these jerks?

Brand has an unforgiving perspective on people who strive to preserve the role of craftspeople over the results of their craft. It seems easy to transpose to modern AI sentiment.

The opening chapter is an absolute page turner of a race around the world, and tour of very different attitudes to do it with.

One line, on model T fords: (Once customers took on the responsibility of maintenance) β€œthey discovered that the power to maintain is the power to improve”

β€œMaintenance of Everything” by Stewart Brand feels like such a grounded way of looking at the world, at a time that it’s easy to move so fast that we can easily get behind on what matters.

The best time to start an AI cult was 20 years ago. The second best time to start an AI cult is today.

I am aware of the things you hope for me to pay you to reveal. Please don't bother me with this familiar type of offer.

I'm not very active on any public social media lately, tbh. I think the model is flawed.

I don't care for the heat that comes from more specific criticism, they never wanted to hear it. I hear they're pivoting away from social media anyway.

For instance, she was recently mentioned in this great talk by @dustyweb.bsky.social crediting her for co-defining a philosophy of agency-maximizing, which I think is a marked improvement over utility-maxing, if one's trying to pick a metric to ethics-max.

Fun talk, too!:

The irony is that giving up the human craftsmanship for vibes coding also happens to dilute the benefits over vibe coded alternatives.

Ever have a feeling like β€œwow, this app that used to move slow sure has released a lot of buggy long requested features lately, I wonder if I’m downstream of some vibe coding”? (Roam Research)

β€œsource?” is actually a compliment, because it implies the asker trusts the claimer over their own ability to do research.

It is absolutely ridiculous that Adrienne Villa's death has basically gone unreported in local & national media

An anti-ICE protester being held on $1.3 million bail found dead in a courtroom jail cell & crickets from media. Should make you question why they want this kept quiet!

Oh I'd sure love if I could write posts that targeted tagged portions of my followers. Twitter got so weird for me. Early on it was close friends and comedy nerds, and eventually those friends were drowned out with tech people. I wish I could have segmented them.

Or maybe that knowledge would just cause more people to pander and corrupt their natural expressions to their perceived audience's interests.

There's a balance between some tasteful "reading the room", vs when pandering goes evil/manipulative.

Getting new followers when I haven't written anything is a weird feeling.
I bias to thinking it's a bot.
I loved the obvious attribution that comes from the wave after a good tweet.
Maybe would be fun if the attribution was sticky: View followers by pie chart of what activity got them on board.

It is still possible that it's an Indiana Jones situation. Probably worth checking that fridge.
