“It’s a start” is a *powerful* phrase that’s carried me from college to today, and even from one gender to another in a way that is very personal and probably hard to explain.
I don’t think it’s appreciably different in the way we treat the rest of the world. I think it feels different day to day because conditions have degraded domestically and the people doing the monsterism don’t feel the need to mask it anymore.

You don’t just want lots of pens because you lose them. Having several pens on hand is a courtesy, like carrying a knife, a lighter, breath mints, tissues, or gum.
Someone around you will need one of those, and it feels very good to be the person who provides it on the spot.
I don’t like ball points, and any really fancy pen smears like crazy for me. Also, they’re expensive.
