parenting is really hard. being inundated in lies 24/7, including by this MAHA government, is disorienting and brain-hurting. most parents are already exhausted. i think it's not so helpful to moralize this issue and much more helpful to approach it as a systems and policy problem

there are still some bad parents in the mix, and the profiteers, fraudsters, and cranks who lead MAHA are a different matter entirely. like the ones who said CDC workers deserved being shot at and so on. they're in it for themselves.

agreed

the whole idea of public health is that our actions affect other's health

key point point:
there is a big difference between grifters who lie to people and intentionally muddy the waters, and laypeople who are lied to, trying to make sense of the information and misinformation out there

lay people are inundated with information and it can be incredibly difficult to determine which leaders are reliable, presenting science honestly, and/or grifting outright (and unfortunately some of them are physicians)

they dont know theyre hurting their children, they are being lied to

i don't think most anti-vaccine parents are bad parents. we are drowning in medical misinformation. it's really hard! and a lot of these parents are more accurately described as vaccine hesitant than ideologically opposed. they have good faith questions that deserve to be answered with compassion.

the rapid spread of gambling, notably easily accessible sports gambling, is a big problem and going to hurt a lot of people

A mom just came in SO EXCITED to find a map store bc her son would LOVE it.
She tries to be coy. "My son is... Really into maps. Real special kid."
I'm like, ma'am, this is a map store. Half my customers are on the spectrum. I have a trains and transit section. You're among friends.

"sir this is a wendy's" = "I have no idea why you're here for that but this is possibly the LEAST relevant place for you to be right now"
"ma'am this is a map store" = "this is an even more relevant place for you to be than you know yet."

yep, mRNA platforms seemed like a great way to do this but this admin has cut funding for mRNA vaccine research and FDA just tried to block an mRNA flu vaccine

would be cool if we had some sort of, i dunno, nimbler platform to more quickly create flu vaccines that match circulating strains, someone should look into that

Stark Divide: Americans More Confident in Career Scientists at U.S. Health Agencies Than Leaders | The Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania When it comes to reliable health information, Americans are more confident in federal health agencies' career scientists than their leaders.

A new Annenberg poll shows Americans trust federal career scientists and independent medical groups more than in the political leaders running U.S. health agencies
