where i create from

a five-panel mini comic of a scene in E.M. Anderson's The Lord of the Wood, in full color, headed "XXVIII. In which Arthur faces several things he'd rather not, including a stab wound and feelings." In the first, large panel, Arthur, a middle-aged white man with a mop of golden hair, blue eyes, and glasses, viewed head-on, sits on the forest floor, cradling a stag's head in his lap. The stag has autumn leaves wound around his antlers and a hunting knife in his shoulder. Arthur says, "Please. Please remember." In the next three small panels, Arthur, viewed from the side, kisses the stag's nose, presses his forehead against the stag's, and then, after a magical poof between panels, opens his eyes in surprise as he feels a furry, pawlike hand against his cheek. In the last, larger panel, Arthur, crying in relief, presses his forehead against the forehead of a weary man with antlers, a deer's ears, moss creeping across his throat, hazel eyes, and black hair in a messy bun. He has big Disney princess eyes yet also looks exhausted and vaguely pathetic. This is Ira, and he smiles reassuringly at Arthur, cradling his neck in a hand that has become more like a paw. Ira's antlers and both men's heads break the bounds of this panel.

She seemed to mind Ira considerably less in this form. Arthur was not unconcerned. He crawled toward the stag and stroked his neck. The stag’s nostrils flared, but he didn’t kick or bite or try to escape. “That’s it. It’s me. Please, Ira. You’ve got to remember.” Arthur lifted the stag’s massive head into his lap. He didn’t know what to do. It had taken so long just to get Ira to let him approach. “Please. Please remember.” The stag snorted. Eyes brimming, Arthur laughed, kissed his nose, and pressed their foreheads together. A moment later, his forehead was resting against Ira’s. Arthur laughed once more and burst into tears.
