Yep. Every bookstore in Canada I emailed turned me down, and I’m sure Ingram pricing has a lot to do with that.
But then again, I am regretfully American.
Most kidlit books that tackle difficult topics either have to skim on the depth to keep engagement or just not be something kids want to read again. This managed to keep fun and vibrancy from the kids POV while showing the Mom was struggling. So it somehow managed to do both.

The geography in Red Demon is (very) loosely based on the Appalachian mountains - ancient mountains worn down to wooded hills and gorges. Anyone who's been to Ithaca or the surrounding areas knows it feels like those forests belong in an epic fantasy. Now they do!
