It was really nice to find Brown Hairstreak eggs at the Begbroke site last week. This species has declined due to hedgerow removal and annual flailing. The site offers promising potential for hedgerow/habitat enhancement alongside the development that could support this somewhat elusive butterfly.

Lots of Holly Blue, Celastrina argiolus, around the ivy at the moment. The spring generation primarily uses holly, whereas the summer generation switch to ivy. One of the many beautiful species supported by this underrated plant!

A 'zombie' 7-spot ladybird standing guard over the cocoon of Dinocampus coccinellae.
Many people have noticed the abundance of 7-spot ladybird in the UK this summer. I wonder if there will also be a related boom in Ladybird Parasitoid Wasp, Dinocampus coccinellae? It turns the host beetle into a 'zombie' bodyguard, standing guard over the developing wasp pupa.

Both of these species are widespread and fairly common. More of a reflection of recording effort/bias but great to see nonetheless!

Lovely (albeit wet) day in the field yesterday, establishing a sampling programme to measure a biodiversity baseline at Begbroke Innovation District. However recent heavy rain had flooded several pitfall traps!

The taxonomic biases in biodiversity data are growing over time. The amount of data we are collecting is growing, but the biases get bigger. We need to make a conscious effort to study the understudied!
