Like, if the numbers were that good, why keep them secret? Why fight that goddamned hard to keep anyone from learning how much water AI data centers actually use?

I mean, yeah, I get it, I'm not trying to challenge folks on how data centers work โ€” but there's a disconnect.

Every time there's a discussion of AI and water usage, I see folks with data center experience explaining how modern data centers don't consume water in the way articles about AI describe, how you can effectively do things closed-loop and the like to avoid wasting water. I read those [โ€ฆ]

@glyph Yeah, makes sense. With enough violence, you can make Windows work just fine. It just takes a startling amount to get there...

@glyph I can't address macOS since I'm again entirely outside of that world, but IME, no matter how painful Linux dev is, it pales in comparison to Windows dev as soon as one single line of native code enters the chat.

@glyph .NET (not .NET Framework, because branding) is basically nodejs in terms of the static linking approach to packaging, yeah. You have to bring all your dependencies with you. This is a good idea, actually, for anyone used to Windows development back when you had to rely on a single fucking [โ€ฆ]

@glyph I've literally run into cases where a user-facing application fails entirely if Visual Studio is installed on the same computer.

UCRT helps somewhat, but not nearly enough. There's a reason why I not infrequently find that running Windows apps on Linux in separate Wine prefixes is more [โ€ฆ]

@glyph I mean, yes, right up until an application doesn't work, and then "computers are just like that."

The number of times .NET Framework is the wrong version, or that .NET is missing entirely (Windows ships with .NET Framework, not with .NET, same problem as Windows PowerShell vs PowerShell [โ€ฆ]

@glyph I mean, yes, but should I write my Windows app to use GDI, GDI+, WinForms, WPF, UWP, or whatever they're doing nowadays?

That only works on the corporate side because they throw oodles of money at propping up that hodgepodge of manager-getting-promotion frameworks, but yeah... that [โ€ฆ]

I guess what I'm saying is "please don't overextrapolate from one critically important data point in ways that throw people taking SSRIs, a category of medication that can include some *very bad side effects* under the bus."

Medications can affect your emotions, actually, including creating intense feelings of anger. Just because it's a myth that *a particular* medication causes anger doesn't mean that managing moods under medication *in general* is a matter of willpower and emotional maturity.

@whitequark Yeah.... there's a reason I try to avoid depending on system packages whenever I can. The idea of having one consistent set of versions *for all software installed on a system* is... not sustainable.

Now I just need to poke around and figure out why conan is running VSC++ in C++14 mode instead of using C++17.

HOLY SHIT. It worked! One of the Python/Rust pyreading packages compiled, from a plain `pdm sync`, on a Windows VM that had never seen Rust before. The only part that PEP 517/8 didn't manage automatically was installing VS Build Tools, which *fair*. Very, very fair.

@glyph (Entirely separately, it is infuriating that Windows still doesn't ship PowerShell by default, only Windows PowerShell, when Windows PowerShell got its last version in 2016. Software written today, ten years later, breaks when you only have PowerShell installed.)
