I find comfort in the smell of cut grass
the sound of a horse’s hooves on a country road
an echoed crow of rooster and trumpet moo of cow
cool spring water
just beyond the stables
where the pudding stone shed holds jars of green beans and tomatoes
iced tea sweet
family complete
my memories of home

A soft melodic birdsong
lifts above a misty morning's light
clouds adrift
cast a billowy veil of twin
upon a golden hill
There I stand
face to the gentle winds
separated
from the flight of which I dream
by this human vessel
and this lack of wings

There was peace to be made
wounds to be healed
Bridges to cross
lines that would yield
Where do we find
our common ground
when the boundaries we set
are drawn in the round
Two silos we be
side by side
Yet rarely we see
eye to eye

A tug of the lanyard
place luff to leech
afore setting course
to the heart of the sea
Pipers and shanties
filling the air
winds picking up
in the sails
“The bounty be good
the waters be fair
the whales gather ‘round
that we garner our share”

the rains that fed it
from skies above
the sun that warmed it
with rays of love
and winter’s cover
that kept it safe
so it might rise
in spring
with grace

the last thing we want
is to correct the error
made in the first place
