I write short SFF stories & drabbles (https://kickin-the-darkness.com) and am a member of Codex and SFWA. Follow me for SF, Alabama (esp Huntsville), and democracy. BTW, AI slop is gross and "an insult to humanity." https://nobodywantsyouraislop.com
The mortals dealt with it.
there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for
This is Albie. He was so touched by his family singing happy birthday in his native language that he didn't notice the cupcakes with his face on them. 13/10 hbd Albie #SeniorPupSaturday (TT: _sallyv)
Superheros brainwash our children out of the idea of collective action and mythologize powerful man thank you for coming to my TED talk
If you ever fly into Huntsville, AL (home of Redstone Arsenal, Missile Defense Agency, many other military orgs, and Space Command--coming soon!) the whole terminal is plastered with military weapon system ads.
Then there's the vendor hall(s) for the annual Space & Missile Defense symposium...
In the last couple decades a fair number of people advocated "just give the GOP control, let them ruin everything, and that'll burn it out of the system for good."
First W, then first term Trump, and what we learned instead was that a great number of people shouted, "MOAR PLZ!"
I never read a Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew book, but I devoured every Three Investigators one.
it seems so simple
Well, this is some serious timeline synchronicity!

Small yellow blossoms descend from a newly budded branch.
Eastern leatherwood blossoms on Cedar Gap Mtn, Alabama.
Very small, and bloom only briefly.
Aerial view of five rows of graves being prepared by people and digging equipment, with vehicles on the left side.
Once you see this image as a grim American flag you cannot unsee it.
These are the 4 things AI can do well:
β’Clean up your email inbox (badly)
β’Give my shittiest neighbor (Alan) something to talk about at a party
β’Tell a 12 yr old to kill himself
β’Incinerate a school at 10:16 AM on a Tuesday
You can see why we need to base our economy around it
No shit Sherlock.
Black and white photo of four kittens spilling out of a basket that seems to be partially full of sticks or vines or something. Theyβre all short haired, and there is a black haired tuxedo, two tabbies, and what looks like a white and calico. Two of them look remarkably grumpy, and the other two seemed kind of blank and possibly confused.
Historians agree that the real Pandoraβs Box was likely a basket of grumpy kittens. Postcard from my collection, mailed 1904.
Last Saturday, when news of Trump's attack on Iran became known last Saturday, I went and gassed up the car.
Checked the price when we went shopping this morning and saw it had climbed 40 cents/gallon in the six days since.

FISH POEM Stella Sacco My best friend in Catholic grade school, Tony, Lived on one side of the highway to Pittstield And between the sets of lanes, Set deep down a sharp incline, There was a little stream Running from one corrugated pipe to another And when I'd come visit we'd cross the road And we'd climb down And we'd get our hands and shoes wet And we'd hunt for cool rocks. But one day we found a big fish instead.
It was in a pool slightly deeper and wider Than the rest of the stream And we were mystified. It was big, much bigger than we figured A fish in a stream that narrow should be. Not that we had ever seen a fish there before. It was alive and so still That we were able to reach into the water And stroke it And feel its slick scales And so we sang songs to it And we called it a gentle giant And it didn't swim away And we thought it was a miracle And we wondered where it would go from there And we went back inside.
The next time I saw Tony I brought up our gentle giant And he looked at me with a sort of bladed pity And said "It was dying, dummy." He explained he had talked to his mom And his mom had said The fish came from somewhere else And had gotten stranded in that stream somehow And had nothing to eat anymore And not enough room to swim And the reason it didn't swim away from us Is because it couldn't swim away from us. It couldn't swim anywhere. We were the giants, not the fish, And we had played with it As it was dying.
I got sad. Maybe it was able to go downstream, I offered. Tony countered with a "How?" For which I did not have a great answer. But I just think If I was dying, As l am every day, I would like someone Who thought I was miraculous To touch me And feel my soft skin And sing to me While I went.
