There was a throwaway line i caught a couple of episodes ago where she's talking to Mark and he said Doug had been seeing the twins - i thought it was unlikely he would have just left her and them to fend for themselves, it resolved a plot hole for me.

Spot on! And I didn't even need to peel the apples, just cut them off the core and put them in the blender.
