In 2007, Cheryl Lynn Allen became the first African American woman to be elected to the Superior Court of Pennsylvania. Judge Allen retired from the bench in 2015. She is a founding member of Women Without Walls and a former board member of Child Watch and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). In 2015, Judge Allen received the prestigious Geneva College Serving Leader Award.

Ethel D. Allen became the first Black woman elected to Philadelphia City Council in 1971. She later served as Pennsylvania's Secretary of the Commonwealth. Her work focused on civil rights, housing equity, and expanding opportunities for marginalized communities.
Ethel D. Allen was a trailblazer for Black women in the field of medicine, spending seven years applying for medical schools before finally being accepted at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and earning a doctoral degree in 1963.
