The U.S. economy lost 92,000 jobs in February. That's 5 of the last 9 months with overall job losses.
A day after admitting his affair with a female staffer who later died after lighting herself on fire, Rep. Tony Gonzales R-TX drops his reelection bid. Much more in today's 'Regular Order' from Capitol Hill.

Rep. Tony Gonzales R-TX will not seek reelection
Only one House member did not vote on the 'war powers' resolution today. He has his mind on other things evidently.
The House has defeated a 'war powers' resolution designed to limit U.S. military action against Iran
Trump is replacing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem with Sen. Markwayne Mullin R-OK
I want to thank the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for letting me write a weekly column for the past 5 years. My final column is pretty simple - Congress can do better, but so can the state of Georgia. No paywall, read it at this link -->

Ex-Rep. Anthony D'Esposito R-NY turned aside questions at a House hearing today on whether he's going to quit his post as Labor Dept IG to run for Congress. (He lost in 2024 after reports that he had both his fiancΓ©e's daughter and his mistress on the office payroll.)
"I made a mistake. I had a lapse in judgment." Rep. Tony Gonzales R-TX admits he had an affair with a female staffer who died after lighting herself on fire. Full interview at www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP9n...
The U.S. Senate has refused to take up a "War Powers" resolution to limit President Trump's military attacks on Iran. The House will vote on a similar measure on Thursday. Breaking ranks were Sen. Rand Paul R-KY (voting Yes) and Sen. John Fetterman D-PA (voting No)
π¨π¨Big surprise from the House Oversight Committee, which voted 24-19 to subpoena Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify about the Epstein Files. Dems + 5 GOP Yes votes - Boebert CO, Burchett TN, Cloud TX, Mace SC, & Perry PA.
Also headed to a May runoff in Texas is Rep. Julie Johnson D-TX. She will face an uphill fight against her predecessor, ex-Rep. Colin Allred D-TX. He originally was running for Senate, but bowed out when Jasmine Crockett got in that race.
Two incumbent Democrats will go into the May 26 runoff in TX-18. Age is the obvious difference. Al Green is 78. The newly-elected Christian Menefee is 37. One of them won't make it to November.
Along with Sen. Cornyn, four House members in Texas were also forced into a May 26 runoff (3D,1R). The Republican is Rep. Tony Gonzales R-TX, the guy who pressed his female staffer for a sexy pic (she later killed herself). Gonzales trails Brandon Herrera.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw R-TX is the first incumbent casualty in the 2026 midterms, and it wasn't close. That makes it 53 House members not returning after November - 32R/21D. Turnover for the entire 2024 election cycle was 60 members in the House.
While Cornyn and Paxton beat each other up for the next 12 weeks, Talarico can get ready for November. You'll note that slightly more people voted in the Senate Democratic primary in Texas than the GOP race (2.21 million to 2.12 million)
Sen. John Cornyn R-TX still leading as he heads to a runoff with AG Ken Paxton in Texas on May 26. This will be a bruising and expensive 12 week campaign duel for the GOP.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Capitol Hill to answer questions for the first time since federal agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis
"We knew that there was going to be an Israeli action. We knew that that would precipitate an attack against American forces, and we knew that if we didnβt preemptively go after (Iran) before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties.β jamiedupree.substack.com/p/white-hous...
Top officials basically told Congress today that the U.S. attacked Iran because Israel was about to attack Iran, and the U.S. knew Iran would retaliate against Israel and attack U.S. military facilities, so it was better to attack before being attacked.

The House GOP calendar for legislative business continues to shrink. Next week will be another 2-day work week, with votes only on Wednesday and Thursday. Then the House is out until March 16.
Active duty Coast Guard members and families are writing on social media that they got a full paycheck this week - even with the DHS shutdown. That hints at some kind of Trump Administration funding work-around.
