I deleted a previous post because I inadvertently left out that no one charged under section 111 has been convicted *at trial* (ie some have reached plea deals). It’s still pretty astonishing

I’m willing to argue with people who share my values about how to understand and realize them. That’s productive. But if they don’t, I’m not sure what we have to talk about.
THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!
"[T]he brief does not urge the Court to decide the case on the basis of Catholic doctrine. It urges the Court to apply the Constitution in light of its text, history, and precedent, and to recognize how the executive order threatens to produce de facto statelessness for children born here, an outcome inconsistent with the Citizenship Clause as interpreted by the Court," he said. "References to Catholic teaching do not supply a rule of decision for the Court; they explain the Conference's reasons for participating and highlight the consonance between the American constitutional tradition and a broader moral understanding of the dignity of the child and the integrity of the family."

61 years ago today at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, Selma, Alabama.
Long past time.
Long-delayed Jan. 6 plaque honoring police quietly erected overnight at Capitol
Despite my best efforts, I forgot my workout clothes for this work trip (tho I remembered my shoes🤦♂️), so now I’m lifting weights in the hotel gym in an undershirt and baggie corduroys 😬
Came here to say this. Conservative Catholics made a devils bargain with an American right that is more or less guaranteed to betray them
I just watched a decommissioned ambulance pulling a rusted-out Dodge minivan on a trailer lock up its wheels and skid to a stop at a red light.
God, I miss Milwaukee

I’m just saying you can imagine a world where someone calls themselves a ‘platonist’ and this is what people assume they mean.
We give Plato’s epistemic doctrines a lot of attention, but I feel like I don’t hear enough—really, almost any—discussion of his moral doctrine that it is never permissible to harm anyone.
Thank you! The able-ist vitriol that otherwise progressive folks feel license to hurl at the President is really extremely not okay. His moral turpitude does not excuse anyone else’s.
A characteristically excellent analysis from Quinta re: the legal side of how we got ourselves into this mess
Upcoming conference!

There *are* two processions, but it’s the opposed real relations themselves that are subsistent and there’s three of those
What time does neo-scholastic-sky usually log on?

God is one and three, but sure as shit not two

As Lonergan says, the pursuit of authenticity very often consists, at least at first, in a withdrawal from inauthenticity.
My moms dad, whose parents were a mess to the ground, managed to find a girl from a family with a highly functional alcoholic father in it, and actually this modest improvement tilted things in the right direction over the next two generations.
Dad’s side all took up T-totaling Baptist religion, which helped in that score
It’s a statistical miracle that only one person in each strata of my family tree after this generation developed active addiction as far as I know.
Great grandfathers, tho: drunk
Yes, all of them.
Mom’s side: California Youth Authority Officer
Dad’s side: coal miner, then gas station owner and operator
