While Iโ€™m pretty excited about new tools Iโ€™m equal parts worried about what happens to focus and how this โ€new way of workingโ€ is a breeding ground for anxiety.

The idea of constantly controlling agents โ€on the goโ€ mean you are always โ€onโ€ never โ€freeโ€; constant context switch.

Thats the crux. We didnโ€™t know how things would change when we first saw, industrial machines, computers, the internet - people though they would be โ€out of jobsโ€. Some where, most were merely โ€displacedโ€ into new jobs that did not exist before the new technology.

Itโ€™s impossible to predict now.

Basically I wanted to interact with the โ€systemโ€ I had in Claude Code over WhatsApp.

So I started building it. In less than a day I had a working version. WhatsApp, Todoist, Vercel, rudimentary memory.

Itโ€™s not on par with my Claude setup - but Iโ€™ll continue tinkering with it.

Mine was gradual. I started using Claude Code (with custom system prompt) to manage my Todoist. It was a great time saver when planning and also (weirdly) created accountability.

I tried OpenClaw but it did not serve my purpose. I loved having WhatsApp as an interface though.

And the idea was born

I built my own AI personal assistant. Very interesting experience on building agents.

On thing Iโ€™ve learnt is that using CLI tools is far better than both MCP and API. It takes up a lot less context and, for some reason, most models handle CLI tools beter and make fever errors.

We will be open to do other things.

But just like compilers, automated tests, cloud, containers etc did not kill the team (they changed it) - this will not kill the team. But Iโ€™m sure it will change it.

The work will shift towards understanding value and empathizing with users.

Itโ€™s a new layer of abstraction. Just like we rarely have to think about CPU cycles and memory management today. There will be a whole lot of stuff we wonโ€™t have to think about in the future.

I think both are true. I donโ€™t think the seniors that become bottlenecks are the ones that will make good devs using AI assisted tools.

The socio is actually more important now than ever. What are we building? Why are we building it?

I think we will see a new type of developer emerge.

Itโ€™s an exciting time for product people with a deep tech background (ex developers).

Thanks to tools like Claude Code and OpenSpec we can build and ship products again.

Iโ€™ve built more in the last 2 months than in the last two years.

Iโ€™m sure if I kept tinkering with it and debugging the issues I might have gotten it working.

Trying to build a personal assistant to proactively keep track of my calendar and todos and send me relevant news, and summaries. That was my first step.

Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s fine for many people.

For me it kept spinning out of control, not responding to messages. Dropping workloads.

My bank updated their UI.

The old UI sucked but I learnt to navigate it. The new UI just sucks.

I did like the communication over WhatsApp though. It was pretty neat, if it had actually been able to execute on tasks without bugging out it would have been amazing.

It was fun playing with OpenClaw but Iโ€™m very comfortable that we are far away from a HAL 9K scenario.

I found it amusing at best, mostly frustrating, didnโ€™t manage to do anything useful.

A well configured Claude Code with nice system prompts works much better for me.

4. Iโ€™m old school like that.

If itโ€™s a bug I can also provide a better report because Iโ€™m more comfortable sharing logs, screenshots, system specs and versions of itโ€™s not public.

I think if we can figure out memory to keep contexts smaller and efficient use of models. I.e I now have an agent in my Claude setup for moving and filing using Haiku and only use Sonnet for higher order tasks.

I feel we should be able to figure it out. Not now - but in a year or two.

Iโ€™ve been โ€bendingโ€ Claude Code in weird ways to organize my notes since 20 years back.

For parts of it it works perfectly fine.

Iโ€™m writing a talk about it - finger crossed it might get into @oredev.org

I have a feeling the tech is there. We are hitting a wall on context and token costs.

OpenClaw is the Linux experience of AI agents.

You tinker more with it than you actually use it.

I wonder what will be the MacOS alternative - you know the one you move to when you actually need to get work done.

Sure. But someone elseโ€™s machine does not have all my โ€stuffโ€ on it.

Thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m trying to protect at this point.

Right now itโ€™s just a test. I need to see what itโ€™s all about.

I thought of that. It makes it more powerful. But right now I donโ€™t want to โ€unleashโ€ it locally.

Having it on the VPS allows me to contain it and make sure I donโ€™t let it loose on things I donโ€™t want it to have access to.

For same reason it gets its own email account.

I'm setting up a OpenClaw to play around with. You know, for science.

No. I'm not putting it on my machine. It gets it's own VPS.

I'm very curious about what can be done with it...

If you tried it, give me your best use case!

Iโ€™m enjoying Claude Code with OpenSpec.

Itโ€™s fun. Like watching a pet do cute things.

Iโ€™m not sure itโ€™s useful yet - jury is still out on that.

I have a friend who said, of Starfleet Academy, that this took them out of it - that seeing a person in a wheelchair in the 32nd century seemed unrealistic, since medicine in Star Trek "should be able to cure whatever was wrong with them."

That's not the case, for any number of possible reasons.

I know Iโ€™m like 30 years too old but Iโ€™ve really been enjoying Brawl Stars these last few months.

Got into it to try what all the kids were fussing about.

Itโ€™s a welcome distraction.
