Went with Spheeris because it’s a foregone conclusion they’ll cover Verhoeven at some point, just to close that circle.

The Crying Game, by Still Corners track by Still Corners

Dreampop band Still Corners did a great cover last year that I really like.

I only got through the first story but I’m liking it so far. The Phantasm films are such a janky, bizarre set of films it’s good to get more.

Small job i went out on today turned out to be very small indeed, only one day. But it did give me an opportunity to crack open a new lunchtime book.

It’s the one unforgivable mistake they made in the first run; following James out of town for such a go-nowhere laughably thin story.

His recollections in that new Twin Peaks book are really interesting.

Having seen all of it so many times now, I think James (Marshall) is a pretty good actor who is fairly badly miscast. His moping looks silly and whiny but the moments he gets to lighten up a bit are all solid.

He’s the character I was really excited to see when the Return promo pics came out

Hot damn this was great! And, uh, a lot going on in it. I’ll definitely be revisiting this one to unpack all its secrets.

Plus!

Udo Kier, and a terrific use of Ennio Morricone’s Guerra e pace, pollo e brace on the soundtrack.

A bit of Oscar catch up this morning.

Just watched The Singers (2025), Oscar nominated for best short film. It was sweet and moving but I think Two People Sharing Saliva is still my favorite in that race.

I post mostly silly crap on here. Art I’m enjoying, junky movies I’m watching. But let me also be clear:

Trans rights are human rights

Prosecute ICE
Fuck AI and anyone using it
No war with Iran
No war anywhere
Housing is a human right
Healthcare is a human right.

I second Pontypool. A genuinely terrific film I wish more people had seen. I still want those sequels!

Gnaw: Food of the Gods 2 (you don’t need to see the first, though it is fun it’s mostly unrelated) is an unheralded gonzo gem.

I’m not sure where to find it now. The dvd is out of print and the dodgy YouTube copy I watched years ago appears to have been taken down. recommended if you can find it.

Yeah but they kind of baked it in that his presence would be limited. I wonder how he could have fit in.

Have you checked out A Place Both Wonderful and Strange, by Scott Meslow? I’m reading it now and there’s a ton of new info and insight to the show. I’m really enjoying it.

Just watched my final film of February.

Fantomas (1964)

The first of 3 films w/ Jean Marais as the titular arch villain. I’d seen the Louis Feuillade silent serials, but this movie is very different.

Marais plays Fantomas as a genial super criminal who just likes fucking with people.

Judge Sternwood is my favorite one-off character in twin peaks. He’s so awesome.

I know he’s actually in two episodes but I just mean short characters who arrive and exit quickly.

A frightening conspiracy larger than he imagines.

It’s got that amateurish SOV charm but with decent actors, a nicely realized story, a great minimalist synth score, and real effort and talent put into the direction and editing.

I don’t want to overhype, but this was good.

I *really* liked this. To a point. The violence gets a bit too unpleasant, intentionally so. Veering towards something like Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer on a smaller scale. But the plot was really fun.

My favorite JCVD film and, I think, superior to Face/Off in a way. It’s so lean and focused and somehow makes Wilford Brimley a badass.

It’s a true gem of a movie. There’s such a depth of emotion and character detail in it that every rewatch feels new.

#NowWatching Video Violence, a bit of shot on video grime.

This is maybe not the cheeriest way to start #SOVSaturday, but an amateur horror film filmed and set inside a 1987 video store? Inject that nostalgia straight to my veins!
