We hope this marks the first step towards the wider restoration of beavers in Wales, and that strengthened protection is swiftly followed by a clear management framework, wild release licensing system and national beaver strategy. 3/4

Today, full legal protection has been granted in Wales and beavers are recognised as a native species by the Welsh Government. This brings Wales in line with Scotland & England, ensuring cross-border consistency.

Healthy, connected river corridors are essential for species recovery, including beavers. When rivers are cleaner and given space to reconnect with their floodplains, natural processes - including those driven by beavers - can contribute to long-term resilience. 3/5

Clean Water Now calls for a strengthening of the regulatory frameworks to reduce pollution and restore nature to Englandβs waterways. The call for blue corridors as a pillar of this campaign shows growing backing for MS4W: a network of connected, nature-rich river corridors. 2/5

Beavers are excellent ecosystem engineers, and they will complement Nattergalβs recent work to re-wiggle the West Glen river, restore natural processes in their new 200ha enclosure, benefit local wildlife and strengthen climate resilience. 3/3

Beavers have been released at Boothby Wildland π¦«
It has been wonderful to support Nattergal on this release. Our feasibility assessment showed that Boothby Wildland has the space, hydrology and long-term management commitment needed to support beavers successfully. 1/3

An overhead shot of the wetland, it looks lush and green
Today, it stands as one of the clearest demonstrations of what beavers can achieve when given space and time β vindicating the success of the Scottish Beaver Trial.

An overhead image of the area after beavers, taken in July 2024. The felled area has become a wetland, there is naturally regenerating forest, a stream, a beaver lodge and two beaver dams
Beavers arrived around 2014β15 and quickly reshaped the landscape, building dams that reconnected the stream to its floodplain, rewetted the site and created rich habitat for a wide range of species. [3/5]

A detailed overhead photograph of the landscape before beavers in January 2010. There is non-native monoculture forestry, a large empty felled forestry area, and a straitened stream
A satellite image from 2010 shows a drained forestry site, with an incised stream running through non-native plantation and clear-felled blocks.
Following felling FLS chose natural regeneration over restocking Sitka, and young native trees soon established. [2/5]

In Knapdale, below one of the original Scottish Beaver Trial sites, a former commercial forestry block has been transformed into a thriving wetland by Forestry and Land Scotland and beavers working together. π¦«πΏ [1/5]
