The decks definitely have flaws (plus Amulet + Summer Bloom was just legal) but the flaws are charming. I'd recommend trying the format, especially if you've never played. I researched some representative and balanced lists, if you want a starting point: moxfield.com/bookmarks/d6...
I put together a box of 2014 Modern decks recently and playing them has been a lot of fun. 2014 was when I was just getting into competitive Magic and I was happy to find that the gameplay was as good as I remembered.
I had the same issue. Kind of an insane amount of equity to lose to a bug.
