'I do apologise for any inconvenience this decision might cause. My plan is to make Genesis 22 the subject of my devotional Lent Lectures in 2027, and if the Lord spares me with health and strength, it will be a very, very well-prepared lecture!'
'...and I need to redirect the space in my diary which had been set aside for lecture preparation to prepare that sermon instead. In addition, it appears likely that the funeral will require me to be away from Sheffield on one of the days when a lecture had been scheduled.
Sheffield Cathedral - Wednesday 11 March, 7.00pm
Rotherham Minster - Thursday 12 March, 7.00pm
Doncaster Minster - Monday 23 March, 7.00pm
'This is a deeply unfortunate consequence of the untimely death of my dear friend Andrew Watson, the Bishop of Guildford. He'd asked me to preach at his funeral
Bishop Pete
The three Lent lectures scheduled this month in the Diocese have been cancelled.
A message from The Rt Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, Bishop of Sheffield:
'I've reluctantly come to the conclusion that I must cancel the three devotional Lent Lectures I'd planned which had been due to take place as follows:
The Coast-to-Coast walk is almost as many miles as the spire is tall in feet β and will take 13 days to complete. The route, made famous by Alfred Wainwright, goes from St Bees in the West to Robin Hoodβs Bay in the East. Matthew will be walking between 14 and 20 miles per day.
On Sunday 6 April, Rev Canon Dr Matthew Rhodes will commence the epic Coast-to-Coast walk covering 192 miles, to raise vital funds to restore the iconic spire of St Johnβs Church Ranmoor in Sheffield.
Shaun is Deanery Synod Lay Chairman of the Snaith and Hatfield Deanery and Reader and Deanery Synod Rep at St John's Goole.
'Shaunβs contribution at parish, deanery and diocesan level has been marked by faithfulness, kindness, prayerfulness and an unwavering desire to serve others.'
Weβre shining a spotlight on stories of faith in the Diocese, and todayβs feature is taking a look at Shaun Clarkson.
"Thankfully the Bible gives us a whole heap of examples of people who God called who werenβt confident in the beginning. Moses was reluctant, Gideon felt insignificant, Jeremiah felt inadequateβ¦ the reality is that our confidence is not based on our ability but on the One who calls us."
"People who cross your path comment on how nice you smell, and how capable you are⦠In reality we can spend much of our time in ministry feeling a distinct lack of confidence in ourselves.
"Especially near to the start of a new phase of ministry, we can be painfully aware of how much we donβt know"
This week's Barnabas Blog has been written by Beth Burras, Lead Lay Ministry Enabler.
"Confidence. A quick google search shows me that there are a lot of perfumes and fragrances simply called βConfidenceβ β imagine if it were that easy!"
βDonβt outsource your critical thinking to AI. AI should augment being human, not usurp or replace it. Consider if AI is helping you and your neighbour. The whole Earth is the Lordβs and everything in it.β
βChristianityβs response is that the point of being human is grounded firmly in God - goodness itself. Consider Romans 12:31. The point of being human is to know God and enjoy Him forever.
βA practical response is Matthew 6:33β.
Simon Cross
βThe pressing question is whether, when and why to use AI. We need to understand the ambitions of those shaping the race for ever more powerful AI.
βThe implications of AI depend on the point of being human. We all have a stake in what happens nextβ.
Sheffield Cathedral

'Am I happy with the way that Iβve been spending my time and dividing it between different priorities? Am I happy with the way Iβve been spending the money God has given me to steward? Most importantly, does my life reflect my Christian beliefs and values?'
'In her blog post from a few weeks ago, Beth remembered a wise person saying to her that you can tell what someone values by looking at two things: their bank statement and their calendar. This was a helpful reminder to me to review the patterns I have been inhabiting over the last few months'
