A graphic featuring an oil painting of a red-haired boy reading a book at the table, titled: "Boys Don't Read," - "The Hidden Demographics of the UK's Literacy Crisis," with text below reading "We urgently need a cultural shift concerning gendered expectation around reading." Smaller text below reads "Read for free on Medium / Link in bio." The graphic is decorated with scrabble tiles, a school bell, pencil shavings, a wooden pawn, bookmarks, a scrap of paper, and an old fashioned globe.
I have a new piece up on #Medium today! This one is about who exactly is being left behind admist the #LiteracyCrisis in the UK and how we might be able to fix it.

If anyone has any poems with a strong sense of place that would be accessible for young children (aged 6-11) please drop them in the replies. Bonus points for urban settings, especially London, and bonus-bonus points for themes of home and/or community.

One of the wickedest things Wes Streeting has ever done is push politically convenient falsehoods about suicide rates amongst young trans people. We have new data from the National Child Mortality Database that exposes the truth he tried to cover up.
Reflecting on how silly CBT is for those who have a chemical imbalance and not a thinking pattern problem this morning, when I reacted to a burst water pipe/minor flood with: βAt least one of us was awake, neither of us were at work, it wasnβt raining outside, the cats are safely in my bedroomβ¦β
The Penumbra Podcast is great! The Juno Steel episodes are mysteries, styled after an old noir detective series but set on Mars and very queer. Thereβs alsoCity of Ghosts which features a detective who can talk to ghosts, and Night Shift which has an overarching mystery and a fun meta format.

We're almost at our target to be able to take this family's case to the European Court of Human Rights.
No survivor should face harm from the system that is meant to protect them.
Help us reach our target

Rough day for Sex Matters
Itβs consistently gut wrenching to see children being scapegoated by adults for their selfish political agendas, with no regard for the impact on their health and happiness. Wishing peace and pride to the little girl in this article.

Reminds me of the USAβs βugly laws.β Simply by existing and living our lives (in this case, working to keep the population healthy) our existence is deemed offensive. Itβs funny that the right characterise us as overly sensitive when apparently they feel harassed by our audacity to breathe.
Text that reads: Bathrooms: A new FOI with data from 382 public services, including councils and NHS trusts, found that over a two-year period, only four complaints were made about Trans+ people using bathrooms. In each of the complaints, it was about the policy, not an individual's use - Translucent.
Just four complaints were made about trans+ people using bathrooms over two years across 382 public services, a new FOI has found.
In every case, the complaint was about policy - not an individual (via @translucent.org.uk)
Iβll have to set aside some time to read those meta-analyses, thank you for the links. I quite agree with Montgomery that Haidt does overlook how valuable online community can be and has some conservative-leaning takes, and that the current bans are not going to solve the problem.
Iβd be very interesting to read some contrasting literature if you have any recommendations for me. Psychology graduate here with multiple generations of mental ill health in my family, too.
Have you read it? I agree that blaming smartphones and social media is overly simplistic, and the book is by no means perfect, but he absolutely implicates the lack of autonomy and freedom modern children and teens suffer from, the lack of third spaces, etc.
If only there was as much effort put into improving youth services, making sports, arts and crafts available and affordable, and making the physical environment more 'teen-friendly' as there is for banning kids from social media or taking their phones away.
βbut I have no skills!β really? could you:
β’ map at-risk communities by tapping squares at mapswipe.org
β’ provide visual descriptions for blind people at bemyeyes.com
β’ or click a button to donate to charitable organisations for free at greatergood.com?
you can always make the world better.
No source I can find that corresponds with this screenshot. I know we want to believe this, but would urge people to think before circulating.
What would be the incentive to create and spread this in a left-leaning space, if not to convince us that Reform isnβt a threat, and can be safely ignored?
In this Year of Reading, a gentle reminder:
The best way to get your kids reading is to let them see *you* reading. The way to *stop* your kids reading is to criticize their choices, or to make reading a competition, or a punishment, or a race, or a learning tool. Let it be fun. Let them read.
A collage titled: βLove Thy Stranger: Whispering of the Heart, Night Windows, and Storytelling,β with text beneath reading βWhisper of the Heart shows the mundane for exactly what it is, and insists upon seeing the beauty in it, from its very first scene.β A smaller subtitle reads βRead for free on Medium βοΈ Link in bio.β The venture of the graphic includes a screen cap from Whisper of the Heart, featuring a girl grasping something brightly glowing in her hands, spots of colour leaking out between her fingers. The graphic is decorated with cutout style photographs of Japanese stamps, a full moon, star string lights, a moth, a bicycle wheel, a page of sheet music, a cat tail, and a borrowerβs card from a library book.
