Legally, Cable TV Fox News can lie to the public.
But the law says Broadcast TV must "serve the public interest" so can't lie to us.
We the People do not have the right to sue for lies. We rely on the FCC to protect us.
It is so important that truth not be politicized and the FCC stands up for US.

Who owns the air?
We all do.
Broadcast giants from iHeart to CBS broadcast over the same air we breathe because gov't grants them licenses to broadcast - only if they "serve the public interest."
That the LAW, folks.
And Fairness to ALL sides is in the public interest, yes?
Blame CBS on this one.

News should not be promotional, Talk shows can be.
If a broadcast network promotes one candidate on our air, give opponents Equal Time.
This rule applies not only to TV but to Talk Radio Shows which routinely promote candidates.
It is about Fairness.
Also We the Peoples' ownership of airwaves! π

When @cbsnews.com or its local affiliates interview a candidate who is coming through town, it is presumably for informational news value. They don't have to seek out the opposing candidates for bonafide news coverage.
Years ago, network talk shows were deemed to be bonafide news.Β
But are they? π

Colbert could've had Senate candidate @jamestalarico.bsky.social on his show if the network provided opportunities for his opponents to also be on CBS' air (on Colbert's show or elsewhere.)
That's only fair.
The Equal Time Rule applies to non-bonafide news shows.
Let's unpack that. π

A different take:
CBS could have aired Colbert's interview w/ Texas Dem Senate candidate @jamestalarico.bsky.social but didn't want to provide Equal Time.
The @FCC demands network TV talk shows adhere to its "Equal Time Rule."
CBS misplayed its hand on this, and for once I'm with the FCC.
Why? π

Did you know that YOU legally own the airwaves over which TV and Radio broadcast?
Yep.
Anybody here want to learn how to organize around that principle? That's what we do at Media Action Center.

All broadcasting is local.
Every radio and TV station is licensed to serve its local community.
Did you know you can even petition the government to end a station's license to broadcast? (No? Well, they don't want you to know that.)

Who remembers when Sunday morning shows would put two politicians of opposing parties on at the same time and let them duke it out?
Much better than having a show host ask a few hard questions but allowing guests to answer something else.

Andrew Jackson is reported as saying about SCOTUSΒ Cherokee Ruling, "Let them enforce it."
"The Supreme Court did not ask federal marshals to carry out the decision." (Wikipedia)
Legal Q:
Does the Court have the power to compel federal marshalls to carry out decisions or does the Executive branch?
