been trying to work this out in my head for weeks now, and this isn't particularly articulate, but found so many frustrating comment threads disputing any which one of their fame, whether it's suggesting youtube views = fame, or X is 'a nobody', or not realising jack was a pioneering reality tv star
aitch too tbf, with his 2023 brits win (the room did gasp having not expected it, from where i was sat anyway), mobilising a fan base vs having an audience (which in itself isn't always a plus, casual listeners are what make you go mainstream!)
it's BECAUSE his job involves amping up the numbers and showcasing them, that ginge not only has the statistics but also the proactive voting fanbase; his entire rise has been driven by garnering just that. he's still niche (though now arguably IS famous, i bet he gets stopped in tesco).
in some ways ginge's fame is an echo of jack's (a new form of media, broadcasting their everyday with a smattering of hamming it up for the cameras), but it's also v niche in despite of its numbers (and here's where my hyperfocus-slash-masters thesis research comes in 🤓)
...but my parents' generation would assume 'everyone. knew martin kemp, and 'nobody' knew aitch. then even more directly, lisa and shona as key soap stars, but how it felt like EVERYONE knew mandy dingle even if they didn't watch emmerdale vs needing to watch eastenders to know whitney
in other news i found it so interesting how discourse on the casting really showed how the lack of monoculture / fractured media landscape means how there's no one standard of 'fame', and how it's developed over time. e.g. these are comparable in terms of overall hits / time in the charts
(tbf also that she knew he wouldn't have had a preconceived idea of her as influenced by tabloid-esque media)
after watching the non-trial bits of i'm a celeb (and then, mostly via clips), surely ruby wax must do a series of 'investigating online fame' via interviewing participants. i was sure her being drawn to ginge was wanting to understand this new vessel that's creating niche stars
really need video based apps to have some way of going 'this person is really dragging the length out here, downvote'. yt tutorials waffle on so much it's impossible to follow
it might sound silly or obvious but there are a lot of images even a little bit of content-aware fill won't make work (and often from newer artists who've not considered use, as opposed to older artists just being obstinate 🥲)
when sorting/choosing press images, think of how they're used: most websites will crop to 3:2 or 16:9, and often squares, and some will do so automatically without human input / override: please ensure there are options which don't result in members being removed / faces being cut in half!

I say this as someone who once had a horrible time making a festival's website a long time ago because the festival boss dictated what everything should be and it was completely pointless with too many pages btw, but my browser shouldn't panic when looking at a lineup (that i should be able to find)

I'm aware I tend to only come on here to rant, but people who make festival websites should probably think of people who might in fact want to USE festival websites. SO MANY which crash out with huge pointless videos and not enough with actual information at hand.
even if i had to log in to one per major group then aim / impala / etc, knowing the info was there - and crucially, could see updated release dates / embargos (you know the former loves to change on a whim) and contact info for the right region
another call for a music equivalent to games press. let me tick a box as recognising an embargo / limit access to info per account group etc, but searching my inbox subjects for dates then trawling various websites and still being surprised on a random friday is so frustrating
really need the big search engine to offer an option to NOT place endless videos first when looking for instructions where at all possible. the tactics by video makers to extend viewing time are not compatible with my brain whatsoever (and i find video difficult to follow at the best of times)
i didn't want to repeat myself haha, but context! if we all connect to music and artists' work in different ways, what one listener overlaps with is going to completely differ from another, and even within audiences these clusters can be so numerous
whether conspiratorial or otherwise, the facebook ads on the shortform video app implying it's a good place to go live for young users must be known to be hilariously awful (as they don't allow comments from the off)
i personally think this is the contemporary role of music writing: spotify's algorithm is based only on what's already been linked in listeners' minds, then at the other extreme is pandora, entirely musical, where humans offer 'vibe' matching (for want of a much better word i'm sure)
