Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: Developing Tools for Climate-Smart Coral Reef Management in the USVI. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar. Marine heatwaves are increasing in occurrence, driving more frequent and severe coral bleaching events. Facing this new reality, coral reef and marine protected area managers must adapt their existing approaches to conservation and develop new strategies to help reefs persist in a warming climate. Following the severe 2023-24 coral bleaching events that unfolded across the Caribbean, The Nature Conservancy’s U.S. Virgin Islands program pivoted the focus of its Coral Innovation Hub to incorporate resilience into reef science and management. With the goal of enhancing coral resilience and increasing the post-outplanting survivorship of restored reefs, the program proposes a multi-step approach that integrates innovative tools with existing management practices. During this webinar, speakers will share the toolbox they have been developing to support this climate-smart approach to coral reef management in the USVI, from using drones to monitor bleaching to utilizing thermal testing and genotyping on surviving colonies to select for resilience in coral propagation.

β€œI work in ocean conservation, and I've flown internationally six times this year for conferences. Each time I board the plane, I feel overwhelming guilt. But I also tell myself that these connections matter, that the collaborations formed at these events will lead to bigger impact. I don't know if I believe that anymore, or if I'm just making excuses because I love the work and the travel.”
