I'm a bit slower writing than I wanted to, but I banged my head over this technical question during the holiday break and I'd figure I'd write this up so I could help at least one other person. Trying to counter all the AI slop articles I ran into while searching...

I wrote about my childhood friend Alexi Pretti. Please read it and share it and remember him as a human being. @theverge.com
Mubashir and his family came to the United States as refugees from Ethiopia when he was a child, and they all became naturalized citizens in 2019.
Despite being a U.S. citizen, Mubashir was targeted by ICE, assaulted, and detained. Listen to his story:

Is the Talaris development in Laurelhurst destined to be completely open space? Just saw that Seattle city council voted to acquire/condemn it for the developer's tax benefit at the tune of costing SPU $9.6M: seattle.legistar.com/LegislationD... (cc @theurbanist.org @typewriteralley.bsky.social)
A filter for SIGNTYPE = "R10-11A" works for me, but I don't see all of them listed. NE 65th and 15 Ave NE has an omission of many signs (bike advisory and NTOR signs don't show up at all)

Saved by Stoppard Sir, In 1993 my wife and I went to see the first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard (obituary, Dec I), and in the interval I experienced a Damascene conversion. As a clinical scientist I was trying to understand the enigma of the behaviour of breast cancer, the assumption being that it grew in a linear trajectory spitting off metastases on its way. In the first act of Arcadia, Thomasina asks her tutor, Septimus: "If there is an equation for a curve like a bell, there must be an equation for one like a bluebell, and if a bluebell, why not a rose?" With that Stoppard explains chaos theory, which better explains the behaviour of breast cancer. At the point of diagnosis, the cancer must have already scattered cancer cells into the circulation that nest latent in distant organs. The consequence of that hypothesis was the birth of "adjuvant systemic chemotherapy", ", and rapidly we saw a striking fall of the curve that illustrated patients' survival. Stoppard never learnt how many lives he saved by writing Arcadia. Michael Baum Professor emeritus of surgery; visiting professor of medical humanities, UCL r.

Hey Ken, can you tell that loud guy at the bar to stop talking?? I think their name was "Morn" or something..
I really want to look past the opinion section to support the investigative journalists still there, but ... this was the final nail to cancel my subscription. What a bunch of strawmen to comment on an environment and context they know nothing about.
NYT writing about how The Stranger became a political powerhouse without talking to @ericacbarnett.bsky.social @joshfeit.bsky.social or @mudede.bsky.social is extreme journalistic malpractice. Before they came along, it was a nightlife weekly with funny sex advice
I recently ran into this ordinance from 1998 that details a bunch of routes in a restructure when trying to find information about routes 78 and 314: aqua.kingcounty.gov/council/cler...
reposting an old blog post because I think it's cool: every red light that I pulled up to while on a bike ride in September 2022.

np, I was surprised the first time I ran into this too!
it's in the legislative record, just like anyone that's confirmed for an advisory board. seattle.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=...
see ya there!
now i'm trying to go just off of memory... something about a "traffic czar" and how they were going to run "the grid" more efficiently...
wait that wasn't a weird shared dream?!?
