Thanks!
Kriging is interesting. I found out about it after developing the spline terrain technique via discussion in my research thread on Mastodon. I forget the trade offs between the two techniques, but they're in a family together I think. I appreciate you sharing the link though!

Oh yeah, spline math itself could easily be a whole article series ๐

This is the first I've heard of both Jason Booth and Microverse. Thanks for the link - I'll check it out later :D

This is the tool I am currently using for game development!! Avea includes some examples of me using it in her blog post!

Awesome :O Let me know what you think of the post once you read it and if there's anything you'd like me to elaborate on.

The blog post walks through how to set that up in Blender to deform tessellated planes into height maps, touches on different ways to extend the technique, and also features some really cool work other people have done with the technique :O

The core of the technique is you take the binormal of the nearest point on the nearest spline and you dot product that with the relative offset from that point to the point on the model you want to deform, and that's your elevation offset.

An example demonstrating the technique. There are 10 splines shown deforming a subdivided plane into a mountain road.
Another example of the technique, this time showing how it can be used to create roads. A low number of splines (not shown) deforms another tessellated plane, this time into a grassy hill with trees and a lonely road.
I wrote a GRAPHICS BLOG POST about how to MAKE TERRAIN out of SPLINES and SIMPLE MATH in Blender with Geometry Nodes! This technique is very powerful and easy to implement and there's lots of interesting ways to extend it.
