26/30 Alfred Stieglitz
'From the Back Window β 291 ' (1915)
"Winter, Fifth Avenue" π· Alfred Stieglitz. February 22, 1893, at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 35th Street in New York City. Stieglitz, a pioneer of modern photography, waited for three hours in the blizzard for the right moment to capture the scene, which was one of the first pictures he took with a hand camera. The image is a key example of the Pictorialism style, which aimed to promote photography as a fine art by creating atmospheric, painterly images. The composition, with the horse-drawn carriage dominating the foreground and the tracks in the snow, was an answer to difficult technical problems of capturing movement and light in a snowstorm.

This colourful image shows a cosmic lighthouse known as the Egg Nebula, which lies around 3000 light-years from Earth. The Egg Nebula is a βpreplanetary nebulaβ. These objects occur as a dying starβs hot remains briefly illuminates material it has expelled, lighting up the gas and dust that surrounds it. Although the dying star is hidden behind the thick dust lane that streaks down the centre of this image, it is revealed by the four lighthouse-like beams clearly visible through the veil of dust that lies beyond the central lane. The concentric rings seen in the less dense cloud surrounding the star are due to the star ejecting material at regular intervals β typically every hundred years β during a phase of the starβs evolution just prior to this preplanetary nebula phase. In the image center, an opaque oval cloud of gray gas aligned from 1 o’clock to 7 o’clock hides a star. Two strong beams of light from the star emerge from large holes in both sides of the cloud, forming narrow cones extending toward 10 o’clock and 4 o’clock. The central cloud is surrounded by concentric, wispy shells of gas illuminated by the star’s light. The shells reflect extra light where they’re hit by the twin beams. A crowd of smaller stars with cross-shaped spikes over them surrounds the nebula on a black background.

Palestine Action have WON their judicial review in the High Court!
A massive victory for free speech, freedom of association and the right to protest.
A massive defeat for the draconian attempts by Keir Starmer's government to curtail our fundamental rights.
Image description from the Hubble/ESA release: "A disc-shaped galaxy. It glows brightly at the centre and shines a faint white light all around it. The disc is made up of tightly-packed rings of dust, some darker and some lighter. Wide, long lanes of dark reddish dust cross the galaxy in front of its edge, blocking out some of its light; the long strands twist and break apart at each side. A couple of nearby stars and distant galaxies are also visible on the black background."

Ever heard of lenticular galaxies?
#Hubble just captured one 187 Mly away in Pegasus. ππ§ͺ
It's NGC 7722: nothing like a classic spiral or a plain elliptical.
This amazing hybrid looks like a cosmic lens with dark dust rings swirling all around it.

I think the power of a song like Bruce Springsteen's "The Streets of Minneapolis" is not just that it cuts right through the moral smoke screen the feds are putting down, and not just that it is very direct, but that it claims the wider scope and vindication of history and the future to come.

Swirly patterns from reflections of buildings in slightly moving water. Mostly silver and green.

A few more reflections from a lunchtime wander - the patterns are just amazing!

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.
Magical autumn sunset scene at Lake Viverone, Piedmont, Italy: warm village lights glow in the foreground, the calm lake reflects the sky, and distant mountains fade into soft focus. Pastel pink and light orange clouds at sunset contrast beautifully with the twilight sky, while the faint comet resembles a translucent whitish dragonfly gently descending into the rosy clouds. I'm sorry. As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive. Humans possess intelligence, and machines do not. The difference between a human and a word-guessing program isn't how many words the human knows. I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

The weak response from Can, EU and UN to Trump's flagrant crimes in Venezuela is striking.
It exposes that much of the world has been cowed.
Most notable exception: the Latin American left.
That is why the Trump Admin has gone to enormous lengths to defeat the left across the continent. 1/3
A cluster of stars inside a large nebula. The clouds of gas and dust are predominantly bright red in colour and wispy, akin to flames. They are clumped in the bottom-left corner. Other clouds, deeper in the cluster behind many of the stars, appear pale pink. The stars are concentrated in the top half of the image and are mostly small, bright white and six-pointed. They cast blue light over the nebula. Other stars with very long spikes surrounding them lie in the foreground.
M55. This image is filled with white stars, smattered with blue-white and reddish-orange stars, all shining against black space.
Butterfly Nebula. Two glowing lobes of gas extend outward like wings, shining in shades of red, pink, and white. The black background of space is dotted with stars.
Gaseous yellow-orange filaments look like a rose seen from the side and tilted slightly from upper left to lower right, slightly higher than the center of the frame. Extending from the rose to upper left and lower right are gaseous outflows that appear as red lobes that have an overall shape of tall, narrow triangles with rounded tips. Each red triangle is made up of wavy, irregular lines. Dozens of stars are scattered across the field. One particularly bright white star with eight diffraction spikes is located at the top of the yellow rose. Another bright blue star with even more prominent diffraction spikes is to its lower left. The background of space is black. Image credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Yu Cheng (NAOJ)

We will either end fossil fuel dependency and the predatory extractivist basis of global production, or they will end us through wars and ecological collapse - all at the same time.
The Empire strikes back, not just to grab oil and other riches but, fundamentally, to hide its own weakness at home β and to prepare the ground for subjugating its own people, in Chicago, Portland, NYC etc. Meanwhile, a vassal Europe watches in silence... www.theguardian.com/world/live/2...
Blows my mind that some of the same journalists who see Trump as a want-to-be dictator at home are earnestly discussing the "challenges" for this same man to "bring democracy" to a country it just illegal invaded. Please grow up.
