Times front page with banner reading β€œWhy men my age want wives to obey”

This headline is not actually telling the story of the article - which is the writer’s genuine concern at those new stats. But it was a headline that made my heart sink - it feels like any news coverage should be very clearly a condemnation of such backwards thinking

The House of Lords Digital & Communications Committee just published their report on AI, copyright & the creative industries, and their conclusions could not be clearer.

Think this is right and it is a big part of the major dysfunctions of our politics the extent to which it attracts men who think shouting at things makes them heroic fixers and the job of women is to get out of the way.

British female track and field athletes are being asked to cover the cost of their own Β£185 sex tests if they want to compete internationally. Because curbing trans people's rights to participate in anything subjects everyone to intrusive scrutiny and here, hefty expense. This is not a 'them' issue.

Just shows how much contempt Reform has for their own supporters. This is a policy that helps the kids of the wealthy educated liberal elites they claim to despise. And would harm the types of constituency they do well in.

Nice to see @doctorow.pluralistic.net joining the party. With a did:web at that! (Of course it's a did:web we'd all be disappointed if it wasn't)

U.S. Capabilities Are Showing Signs of Rot When a military force begins to decline, the first symptoms may be subtle.

Latest in @theatlantic.com . In only a few days, there are small but worrying signs that the corruption and incompetence of the Trump administration is affecting US military and diplomatic power. A fish rots from the head down.

One of the reasons Ukraine should be part of NATO asap is that it has experience in fighting a modern war, and is now probably the world expert in combat drone operations.

Gen Z men twice as likely as baby boomers to believe wives should obey husbands Global survey shows young men hold more traditional views about gender roles than older generations Almost a third of generation Z men think a wife should obey her husband, according to a global survey of 23,000 people that found young men hold more traditional views about gender roles than older generations. A third (33%) of gen Z men also said a husband should have the final word on important decisions, according to the 29-country survey which included Great Britain, the US, Brazil, Australia and India. Almost a quarter (24%) of gen Z men think women should not appear too independent or self-sufficient, compared with 12% of baby boomer men. Attitudes toward sexual norms also differed sharply across generations, with 21% of gen Z men thinking a β€œreal woman” should never initiate sex, compared with only 7% of baby boomer men. More than half (59%) of gen Z men said men were expected to do too much to support equality, compared with 45% of baby boomer men. For women, the proportions were 41% and 30% respectively. Thirty percent of gen Z men believed men should not say β€œI love you” to their friends, compared with 20% of baby boomer men and 21% of gen Z women. Twenty-one percent of gen Z men believed that men who took part in caregiving for children were less masculine than those who did not, compared with 8% of baby boomer men and 14% of gen Z women. Both genders felt women had more choice in dating and relationships (22%), household roles (24%) and the clothes they can wear (34%), while men were considered to have more choice in hobbies (18%) and jobs (39%). It is so damning of US news media that so many outlets refuse to just straight up say that Senator Tim Sheehy assaulted an activist.

He did not "help" Capitol police. They did not need his help. He wanted to assault the guy and did. He should resign.

So yeah, it’s complicated - but what Badenoch said was still wrong.

Even if we had some converted block 1s, I don’t know if they can be used with current generation Sea Viper systems. Samson is supposed to be upgraded too as part of Sea Viper Evolution.

05.03.2026 07:29 πŸ‘ 5 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

That’s actually probably the biggest challenge. We can’t afford to actually fire too many, in part because the Block 1 order is a conversion job, not additional missiles.

05.03.2026 07:29 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

And you’re absolutely bang on that the failure was her governments. IIRC Asters take something like 30 months to make! They’re working on brining that down, but it’ll still take (best guess) 18 months and stocks are exactly overflowing.

What she could have said: β€œType 45 lacks full MRBM area defence capability until Block 1 arrives in 2028.” That’s accurate, genuinely concerning, and would’ve landed. Instead she made a claim that any defence correspondent could demolish in thirty seconds.

05.03.2026 07:29 πŸ‘ 4 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

The Block 1 gap is real. But that’s not what Badenoch said. She said Type 45s β€œcannot take out incoming missiles.” That’s flatly wrong β€” HMS Diamond shot down a Houthi ballistic missile in live combat in April 2024. First time the RN had intercepted a missile since the Gulf War.

Either Badenoch is INCREDIBLY stupid, or she is just lying. I lean towards stupid. I'd also bet that she read something about Type 45's from some MAGAt on Twitter and just repeated it. It's ironic that she was trying to attack the government on defence competence, and instead undermined herself.

04.03.2026 22:34 πŸ‘ 26 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 5 πŸ“Œ 0

This is jaw-droppingly stupid of Badenoch. As James says, the Type 45 is literally built from the ground up for air defence - its entire role is to protect a naval task group from air threats, whether that's aircraft, anti-ship missiles, or ballistic missiles.

Last week Trump again told Congress and the country that his strikes on Iran last year "obliterated" Iran's nuclear weapons program.

Today he says they were two weeks away from a bomb, something his Administration has not supported with intelligence.

More lies about the war.

"The British right’s desire to live vicariously through the US is even more pronounced than when the Brexit vote happened a decade ago"

On this point, Janan Ganesh is entirely correct.

The so-called "patriots" of the Europhobic English right want to reduce the UK to a US vassal: a 52nd state #Iran

He's obviously right. The Tory position on this is nuts. Why on earth would you want to tie yourself to a President who is clearly not capable of rational decision making and has no idea what he's doing?

It's already not a popular conflict + it's only going to get less popular if it drags on.
